What Is Paver Sand?
"Paver sand" is really two different materials doing two different jobs — one under the pavers, one between them. Buying the wrong one for either job is the most common reason a patio ends up wavy, weedy, or both.

Ask for "paver sand" at a supply yard and you may be handed either of two materials, depending on what the person behind the counter assumes you are doing. Knowing which one you actually need — and being able to say so in the right words — is most of what this page is for.
1. What Paver Sand Actually Is
Paver sand is a general trade term for the coarse, angular, washed sands used to build and finish an interlocking paver surface. It is not a single graded product with one specification behind it, which is precisely why the term causes so much confusion. In an installation, sand appears twice, in two roles that place opposite demands on the material.
Underneath the pavers there is a thin bedding layer, usually about an inch thick, screeded flat over a compacted gravel base. Its job is to give each paver a uniform seat and to let the units settle a few millimetres into place under compaction so they end up level with each other. That sand must be coarse, angular, free-draining, and stable under load.
Between the pavers there is joint sand, swept into the gaps once the pavers are laid and vibrated in. Its job is completely different: it creates the interlock that makes a paver field behave as a single flexible surface rather than a collection of loose blocks, and it keeps water, weeds and insects out of the joints. It needs to be fine enough to fill a narrow gap fully, and to stay there.
One coarse material for structure, one fine material for interlock. Almost every problem people describe with paver sand comes from using the wrong one in the wrong place — or, most commonly, from using an ordinary sand that is unsuited to either.
2. Bedding Sand vs Joint Sand: The Two Different Jobs
Bedding Sand
The correct material is washed concrete sand, sometimes sold as bedding sand, C33 sand, or simply "concrete sand". It is coarse — grains up to a few millimetres — with sharply angular particles produced by crushing rather than the rounding that comes from water transport. Washed means the fines have been rinsed out, so it drains freely instead of holding water against the underside of the pavers.
The bedding layer is one inch, screeded, and never compacted before the pavers go down. This is the detail most DIY installations get wrong. A compacted bedding layer gives the pavers nowhere to settle into, and a layer thicker than an inch behaves like a cushion: it moves under load, and the surface develops ruts and dips within a season or two. The base carries the load; the sand only levels.
Joint Sand
Joint sand is swept across the finished surface, worked into the gaps with a broom, and then vibrated in with a plate compactor so it packs down and the joints can be topped up. Historically this was fine silica sand or a finer grade of the same concrete sand. Today, most installations use polymeric sand — graded sand with binders blended through it that activate when the surface is watered and cure to lock the grains together.
The reason for the shift is straightforward. Plain sand in a joint washes out in heavy rain, gets blown out by leaf blowers, provides a perfect seedbed for weeds, and is easily excavated by ants. Polymeric sand resists all four. 3. Why Angular Grains Matter More Than Anything Else
The single property that separates a sand suitable for pavers from one that is not is grain shape. Crushed sands have sharp, irregular faces; when compacted, the particles wedge against each other and the mass develops genuine shear strength — it resists being pushed sideways. Sands that have been tumbled by water or wind, such as beach sand and play sand, have rounded grains that behave like ball bearings: apply load and they roll past each other, and the layer redistributes rather than holding shape.
Gradation matters almost as much. A well-graded sand contains a spread of particle sizes so the smaller grains fill the voids between the larger ones and the packed density is high. A uniformly sized sand leaves large voids no matter how much you compact it, which is why an apparently "clean-looking" fine sand can settle noticeably in the first winter.
The third factor is fines content. Silt and clay particles hold water, and water in a bedding layer is what makes it soft in spring and pushes pavers upward when it freezes. That is what the "washed" in washed concrete sand refers to — those fines have been rinsed out deliberately, and it is worth paying for.

4. The Sands You Will Actually Be Offered
Washed Concrete Sand (Bedding Sand, C33)
The correct bedding material and the one paver manufacturers specify. Coarse, angular, washed, free-draining. Sold loose by the cubic yard at any aggregate supplier, and in bags at a considerable price premium. For anything larger than a small patio, buying loose is far cheaper even after delivery.
Polymeric Sand
Joint sand with binders that cure when watered. It resists washout, weeds and ants, and produces a joint that stays where you put it. It is more expensive per square foot than plain sand, it must be applied to a completely dry surface, and it must be watered in exactly as the bag directs. Fine Silica or Mason Sand for Joints
The traditional joint filler, still used on permeable installations and by installers who prefer a joint that can be topped up rather than one that sets. It is cheap and it never cracks, because there is nothing in it to crack — but it washes out, grows weeds, and hosts ants. Stone Dust and Screenings
The fine waste from crushing stone. It compacts extremely hard, which some installers like for bedding, but it also holds water and is prone to frost heave in cold climates. Most paver manufacturers specify washed concrete sand rather than screenings, and if the pavers carry a warranty it is worth following that specification.
5. What Not to Use
Three sands come up constantly, all of them cheap, all of them available at the same store as the pavers, and none of them suitable.
Play sand is washed, screened and rounded specifically so it is soft and safe for children — every property that makes it good in a sandbox makes it wrong under pavers. Mason sand is fine and uniform, blended to make mortar workable rather than to compact under load. In joints it is passable in the same way plain silica sand is; as bedding it is too fine, holds water, and gives the same settling problems as play sand.
Beach or river sand is rounded by definition, often carries salt or silt, and behaves worse than either of the above. It is also, in many places, illegal to remove in quantity.
6. How Much Paver Sand You Need
For bedding, a one-inch layer over a given area takes roughly one cubic yard per 300 square feet. A cubic yard of damp sand weighs around 1.3 tons, so a modest 400-square-foot patio needs about a yard and a half — nearly two tons of material, which is a delivery rather than a car trip. Add ten per cent for the screed waste, the low spots in your base, and the pile you will inevitably lose into the grass.
For joints, the coverage depends on joint width and paver thickness, which is why bag figures vary so widely. As a rough guide, narrow joints on standard pavers take about one 50-pound bag per 50 to 100 square feet; wide joints or flagstone with irregular gaps can use two or three times that. Buy one bag more than the calculation suggests — running out mid-job means the joints cure at different times and often look different afterwards.

Bagged or Loose?
Bagged bedding sand is convenient and expensive. At typical yard prices, a cubic yard delivered loose costs a fraction of what the same volume costs in bags, and the crossover point comes surprisingly early — somewhere around a hundred square feet of patio. Loose sand also arrives damp, which is an advantage: damp sand screeds cleanly and does not blow around, whereas bone-dry bagged sand runs off the screed board and takes longer to level.
The one argument for bags is storage. A yard of sand tipped on a driveway has to be used or moved before it rains and before the neighbours object; bags can sit in a garage until the weekend the base is finally ready. On a small project spread over several weekends, that flexibility can be worth the premium.
Common Paver Sand Mistakes
Using Sand as the Base
Sand is a levelling layer, not a structural one. Without four to six inches of compacted gravel under it — eight to twelve for a driveway — the surface will settle no matter how carefully the sand was screeded. This single error accounts for most sunken patios.
Making the Bedding Layer Too Thick
One inch, screeded. Two or three inches of sand used to bridge an uneven base behaves like a cushion, moves under load, and produces ruts. Fix the base with base material, not with extra sand.
Compacting the Bedding Sand Before Laying
The pavers need to settle a few millimetres into the screeded sand when the plate compactor passes over them. Compacting the sand first removes that allowance and leaves the surface uneven, with individual units standing proud.
Using Play Sand Because It Was Cheaper
Rounded grains cannot interlock. Play sand under pavers stays soft, redistributes under load, and produces a wavy surface within a season — and relaying the patio costs far more than the sand ever saved.
Sweeping Polymeric Sand Into Damp Joints
The binders activate on contact with water. Applied to joints that are still damp from rain or washing, the sand sets partway down, leaves voids underneath, and hazes the paver faces. The surface has to be genuinely dry before the bag is opened.
