2. Shrinkage Is the Whole Story

Nearly every visible spackle repair failed for the same reason: the filler occupied the hole when it was wet and occupied less of it when it was dry. Understanding that one mechanism tells you most of what you need to know.

A conventional filler is a solid binder suspended in water. As the water leaves, the remaining solids consolidate and the volume drops. In a wide shallow smear over a drywall seam that barely matters, because the loss is spread across a large area. In a deep narrow hole it matters a great deal, because all of the loss is concentrated in one small spot and appears as a dimple.

Lightweight fillers solve this by replacing much of the water with air trapped in microspheres. Those bubbles do not evaporate, so the cured filler occupies nearly the same volume as the wet one. That is the entire reason lightweight spackle exists, and it is why it can fill a nail hole flush in a single pass when a heavier compound cannot.

The trade-off is mechanical. Those same air voids mean there is less binder per unit volume, so the cured filler is softer and weaker. This is why the advice inverts with depth: shallow damage wants the low-shrink, low-strength product, and deep damage wants the high-shrink, high-strength one applied in layers.

The practical rule that follows: under an eighth of an inch, use lightweight and fill once. Over an eighth of an inch, either use a no-shrink elastomeric formulation or accept that you are doing two coats. Trying to fill a deep hole in one pass with a shrinking compound is the most common self-inflicted wound in wall repair.

Picture Hangers and Wall Anchors

A removed plastic anchor leaves a ragged hole with a raised lip of torn paper. Push the lip in with the back of a knife handle first so nothing stands proud of the surface, then fill. If the hole is deeper than a quarter inch, use a no-shrink elastomeric filler or build it in two layers.

Dents and Dings

Shallow and wide is the easiest case for any filler, because shrinkage is spread over a large area. Feather the edges out well past the damage — a repair that ends abruptly casts a visible line under sidelighting even when it is perfectly flat.

Screw Pops

Fix the fastener before you fix the surface. Drive a new screw into the stud about an inch from the popped one, then either drive the original below the surface or remove it entirely. Fill both dimples. Skipping this means the screw pops again and takes your repair with it.

Holes Above Half an Inch

Past this point spackle is the wrong tool. There is nothing behind the hole to support the filler, and a fill with no backing cracks out. Fill flush, not proud. The mound-and-sand habit is the single biggest cause of visible patches. Sanding a raised fill inevitably scuffs the paper face of the drywall around it, and that scuffed ring absorbs paint differently — the halo you see afterwards is abraded paper, not filler.

Judge dryness by colour, not by clock. The whole patch should be a uniform shade, including the centre. A ring of dry edge around a darker core means the interior is still wet and sanding will drag it out.

Scuff, do not sand. For a flush fill, a folded piece of 220-grit paper or even a damp sponge is enough to knock down any slight ridge. Reserve real sanding for repairs that genuinely stand proud.

Check it in raking light. Hold a torch flat against the wall and look along the surface. Every defect that will show after painting is visible this way and almost none of them are visible under ordinary room lighting. Fixing what you find now is far easier than fixing it through a topcoat.

Tools Worth Having

A flexible putty knife in two widths covers almost everything — a narrow one around an inch and a half for pressing filler into holes, and a wider four or six inch blade for drawing off dents and feathering edges. Stiff blades are made for scraping rather than for filling work; a flexible blade follows the slight curvature of a wall and leaves a flush surface rather than bridging across it.

Beyond that, a sanding sponge in a fine grit outperforms paper on a wall because it conforms slightly and is far less likely to gouge. Keep a damp cloth to hand for wiping filler off the surrounding paint while it is still wet, which is much easier than sanding it off later.

6. Why Patches Flash Through Paint

You fill the holes, sand them flat, paint the wall, and in certain light every repair is still visible as a dull spot. The surface is genuinely level, so what is going on?

The answer is porosity rather than geometry. Cured spackle is far more absorbent than the aged, painted wall around it. When the topcoat goes on, the paint over the patch soaks in while the paint over the existing film sits on the surface. The patch ends up with less binder at the surface and therefore a lower sheen. Painters call this flashing, and it is more pronounced the higher the sheen of the paint — invisible in flat, obvious in semi-gloss.

The fix takes seconds: a dab of primer on each patch, or a product with primer built in. Primer seals the porous filler so the topcoat behaves the same everywhere. On a wall with many repairs, or any wall in eggshell or above, priming the entire surface is worth the extra twenty minutes.

Spot-painting a repair and hoping it blends produces a visible patch of its own, in a slightly different shade, because the new paint has not weathered. Overfilling and sanding back

The instinct is to mound it up and sand flat. Sanding a proud patch scuffs the surrounding paper face and creates a halo that shows through the topcoat. Fill flush, and add a second thin coat if it sinks.

Using lightweight spackle for deep damage

Lightweight fillers are aerated to resist shrinking, which also makes them soft. In a deep hole they have no structural strength and will crack or push in the first time something knocks them.

Skipping primer over the patch

Spackle is far more porous than the surrounding paint. Topcoat sinks into it and dries duller, so the repair appears as a flat spot in a sheen wall even when the surface is perfectly flat.

Sanding before it is fully dry

Damp filler clogs the paper and tears rather than cutting. Wait for a uniform colour across the whole patch, not just the edges, and give deep fills considerably longer than the label suggests.

Filling a screw pop without driving the screw

If the fastener has backed out, filling over it just buries the problem. Drive a new screw an inch away into the stud, reset or remove the popped one, then fill both.
