The number on the tub assumes a thin fill in a warm, dry room. Change any of those and the real answer moves by hours. What actually governs it is how much water has to leave the patch and how easily it can get out.
1. Dry Times by Type and Depth
Spackle dries by evaporation, so the depth of the fill matters more than anything printed on the container. A skim across a dent loses its water in minutes; a plug half an inch deep has to lose it through a surface that is already drying and closing up.

Dry Versus Cured
Two different states get called dry, and confusing them is behind most patch failures. A spackle patch is surface dry when the outside has lost enough water to feel firm and take a light sanding — that is the timing on the tub. It is dry through when the moisture has left the full depth of the fill, which on anything but a shallow skim happens meaningfully later.
Sanding a patch that is only surface dry usually works, because you are only touching the outer layer. Painting one does not: the trapped moisture continues to move outwards through the new paint film, and the result is a patch that darkens, sinks slightly, or shows a faint outline weeks after the room was finished. If the repair is deep and the schedule allows, giving it an extra few hours beyond the point it feels ready costs nothing and removes that risk entirely.
2. What Changes the Timing
Depth of Fill
The dominant factor by a wide margin. Drying happens from the surface inwards, and as the outer layer sets it becomes a barrier the remaining moisture has to pass through. Doubling the depth more than doubles the time. This is why two thin passes with a wait between them genuinely finish sooner than one deep fill, even though it feels like extra work.
Humidity
Water evaporates into air that has room for it. In a humid house — a bathroom, a basement, anywhere in a damp summer — that gradient is small and everything slows down, often doubling the times above. A dehumidifier running in the room is the single most effective thing you can do about it.
Temperature
Warmer air holds more moisture and speeds evaporation, so a room at normal living temperature dries patches far faster than an unheated one. Below about 10°C the times stretch considerably, which is worth knowing before patching a garage or an unheated hallway in winter.
Airflow
Still air over a patch becomes locally saturated and stops taking up more water. Simply moving the air — an open door, a fan pointed across the wall rather than at it — keeps fresh air at the surface and makes a noticeable difference for no effort.
What Is Behind the Hole
A patch over open drywall paper dries only from the front. One over old, absorbent plaster loses a little moisture backwards as well. It is a small effect next to depth and humidity, but it explains why the same filler in two different walls can behave differently.
How Old the Tub Is
Spackle that has been open for a year behaves differently from fresh. As it sits, some of the water leaves and the paste stiffens, and a stiffer fill both holds more volume in the hole and dries less predictably. Stirring in a few drops of water restores the consistency, but a tub with a hardened crust and a dry rim is worth replacing rather than reviving for anything you intend to paint.
3. How to Tell It Is Actually Dry
Three checks, in ascending order of reliability.
Colour. Most spackles are tinted going on — pink, grey, or faintly blue — and dry to a flat, uniform white. Some are sold specifically as colour-changing for this reason. It is a useful first glance, but the surface changes colour well before the middle has dried.
Temperature. This is the test worth learning. Touch the back of a finger to the patch, then to the wall an inch away. Anything still evaporating is losing heat and feels distinctly cooler than the surrounding wall. When the two feel identical, the patch is dry through. It costs nothing and it is far more reliable than watching the clock.
The fingernail press. Press a nail gently into the edge of the patch. Dry filler resists and leaves no mark; damp filler takes an impression. Do it at the edge rather than the middle so any mark is one you were going to sand anyway.
4. Speeding It Up Safely
Fill thinner. The best accelerant is not applying so much in the first place. Two passes at an eighth of an inch beat one at a quarter, both in total time and in how the patch behaves later.
Move the air. A fan set to blow across the wall rather than directly at the patch clears saturated air without driving a skin onto the surface. In a closed room, cracking a window does much the same at a slower rate.

Gentle warmth only. Raising the room temperature helps. Pointing a heat gun or a hairdryer at close range does not: it flashes the surface into a hard skin while the interior stays wet, and the patch then cracks, sinks, or both as the trapped water finally leaves. If you must use a hairdryer, keep it on low, moving, and well back.
Or change product. If the schedule genuinely will not allow the wait, setting-type joint compound cures chemically in 20, 45 or 90 minutes regardless of depth, and it is the professional answer to exactly this problem.
5. Deep Fills and What to Use Instead
Spackle stops being the right product somewhere around half an inch. Beyond that it dries so slowly that the outside sets while the inside is still soft, and the patch shrinks back, cracks, or stays permanently soft under paint.
For a deep gouge, use setting-type joint compound: mixed from powder, it cures rather than dries, builds thick without slumping, and is ready for a second coat on a predictable clock. For anything larger than about two inches across, no filler is the answer at all — the hole needs backing, whether that is a self-adhesive mesh patch or a cut piece of drywall screwed to a wood strip behind the opening, and then tape and compound over the top. 6. Sanding, Priming and Painting
Sand at 180 to 220 grit. Anything coarser leaves scratch marks that show through paint, and on lightweight spackle a coarse grit will simply dig the filler back out. Use a light touch and a sanding sponge on small repairs — you are blending the edge into the wall, not shaping the patch.
On a patch you would rather not create dust over, a damp sponge works instead: wipe gently in circles and the proud filler softens and levels without a speck of dust. It takes a little longer and it is the better option in a finished room.
Then prime before painting, on any wall above a flat sheen. Spackle is more porous than the paint around it, so topcoat applied directly soaks in further and dries to a duller finish — the patch is then visible as a dull spot in raking light no matter how well it was sanded. A dab of primer with a small brush takes seconds and solves it. Once primed and dry, paint as normal, feathering the edges well past the repair.
A Realistic Timeline for a Room of Nail Holes
The practical question behind most searches is whether a wall can be patched and painted in a day, and for ordinary picture-hook damage the answer is comfortably yes. Fill everything in one pass first thing in the morning — twenty or thirty holes takes about ten minutes with a putty knife and a small tub. Make a cup of coffee, and by the time you have moved the furniture and laid dust sheets the first holes are ready.
Sand them all in one circuit of the room with a sanding sponge, wipe the dust off with a slightly damp cloth, and prime each patch with a small brush. Primer on a spot that size is dry within half an hour. That puts you at cutting in and rolling before lunch, with the whole wall finished and genuinely invisible by the afternoon.
The version that goes wrong is the one where a few of those holes were deeper than they looked — old wall anchors, a shelf bracket, a curtain pole — and got the same single deep fill as the rest. Those are the patches that are still cool to the touch at lunchtime and the ones that will show through in a week. Identify them as you go, fill them in two passes, and let them run on their own schedule while the rest of the room proceeds.

Sanding While It Is Still Cool to the Touch
Damp filler gums the paper and drags out of the hole, leaving a hollow and a smeared ring. Use the temperature test rather than the clock, and if it happens, let it dry fully and refill rather than sanding harder.
Filling Deep in One Pass
A quarter inch is about the practical limit for a single application. Deeper than that and the surface skins over while the middle stays wet, which is how patches end up shrinking below the wall line days later.
Blasting It With a Heat Gun
Direct heat dries the outside into a hard shell and traps water behind it. The patch then cracks or sinks as that moisture escapes. Gentle warmth and moving air are the safe accelerants; concentrated heat is not.
Recoating Over a Soft First Pass
A second layer over damp filler seals the moisture in and the whole patch stays soft. Each pass has to dry through before the next goes on, which is another argument for keeping passes thin.
Painting Without Priming
The most common reason a perfectly good repair is still visible. The filler drinks paint differently from the wall, so the patch flashes dull under any sheen. Prime it — the fix costs seconds.
