In most climates, late spring and early autumn are the two best windows. Daytime temperatures are moderate, overnight lows are still comfortably above the minimum, humidity is usually reasonable, and the sun is not intense enough to bake the stain off the surface before it can soak in.

At the other end, above about 90 degrees the problem reverses. The carrier evaporates too quickly, the stain sets before it can penetrate, and the working time shrinks so much that lap marks become almost unavoidable on long boards. Some manufacturers publish a narrower range than the general 50 to 90, and a few offer low-temperature formulations that go into the 30s — read the specific can rather than relying on the rule.

3. Humidity, Dew and Why Autumn Nights Matter

Humidity affects the job twice. Before you stain, it controls how long the deck takes to dry after washing — a wash that dries in a day in dry air can take three in humid conditions. After you stain, it slows evaporation and extends both drying and cure times, dramatically so for water-based products.

Above roughly 85 percent relative humidity, most manufacturers recommend waiting. That is not an arbitrary threshold: at that point the air is close enough to saturation that little moisture leaves the coating, and an oil-based stain applied in those conditions can stay tacky for days.

Dew is the version of this problem that catches people out, and it is worst in autumn. On a clear night the deck surface radiates heat to the sky and can cool below the air temperature, dropping below the dew point and collecting a layer of moisture on a coating that has not finished curing.
