The Practical Rule

On pavers, use a paver sealer.

The chemistry families overlap enough that a generic concrete sealer will physically work on pavers, but paver-specific products are formulated for the two things pavers do that slabs do not — throw efflorescence, and have joints. Those are the failure modes you will actually meet, so use the product built for them.

2. The Joints Are the Real Difference

A concrete slab is one continuous surface with control joints cut into it. A paver installation is hundreds of separate units with sand between them, and that sand is both structurally important and vulnerable. Sealer formulation has to account for it.

Joint Stabilising Formulations

Some paver sealers are designed to penetrate joint sand and bind it in place as well as coating the paver surface. There is no equivalent product in the concrete sealer category because there is nothing to bind. If your joints are loose or lightly eroded, this is a category that exists specifically for your problem — and no concrete sealer will address it.

Moisture Escape Through Joints

Joints are also a moisture path. A paver installation breathes through its joints in a way a sealed slab does not, and paver sealers are generally formulated with that in mind. A very impermeable coating that works fine on a slab can trap moisture rising through paver joints, producing the cloudy blush that is the classic paver sealing failure.

Efflorescence is the white, powdery mineral bloom that appears on masonry as water moves through it and evaporates at the surface, leaving dissolved salts behind. Where the Overlap Is Genuine

Acrylic sealers are the honest overlap. Many acrylics are rated for both concrete and pavers and will state so on the label, and on a mixed area — a paver patio meeting a concrete apron, say — such a product is the sensible choice for a consistent finish. The rule is to read the label rather than to assume: a product that does not name your surface is not for it.

Where It Is Not

Penetrating silane and siloxane sealers are the concrete specialists, and on an exposed slab facing winter salt they are the durable answer at five to ten years. On pavers they are a legitimate choice for stain resistance without appearance change, but they will not enhance colour and they do nothing for joint sand — so if either of those is why you were sealing, they are the wrong category.

The two rows that have no slab equivalent are the ones that catch people out. Joint sand has to be installed and fully cured before any sealer goes down, and the 30-day polymeric sand cure is a genuine constraint on project scheduling that does not exist when you are sealing a slab.

The shared lesson is about moisture. Both surfaces hold water far longer than their appearance suggests — a slab in its mass, a paver installation in its joints — and both produce the same cloudy failure when a sealer film goes over water that has not finished leaving. Allowing a genuine dry period before sealing is the single most transferable piece of advice between the two.

Acrylics Are the Crossover Category

This is why so many products are labelled for both surfaces: acrylic sealers work on concrete and pavers alike, and the differences between a paver-branded acrylic and a concrete-branded one are often about additives — joint stabilising resins, efflorescence tolerance, slip resistance — rather than the base chemistry.

Epoxy Belongs Indoors

Worth flagging because it is widely sold and frequently misapplied. Most epoxy formulations are not UV stable and will amber and chalk in direct sunlight, which makes them excellent for a garage floor and a poor choice for a patio or driveway of either material.

Most of this comparison assumes concrete pavers, which are the common case. Clay brick and natural stone behave differently enough to be worth separating out.

Using a Generic Concrete Sealer on Pavers

Sealing New Pavers Immediately
