Why Is My Polymeric Sand Washing Out?
Properly cured polymeric sand does not wash away. If yours is leaving the joints, something prevented it from binding β and the cause determines whether a top-up will hold.

Polymeric sand that has cured properly is a flexible solid bonded into the joint. It does not migrate in rain and it does not run down the driveway. If yours is washing out, the polymer never did its job β and the reason it did not is what determines the fix.
1. First, Diagnose Which Failure You Have
Washout has several distinct causes with different fixes, and the pattern of where and how the sand is leaving tells you which one you are dealing with.

The Quick Test
Press a screwdriver into a joint.
If the sand crumbles to loose grains under light pressure, it never cured and the whole installation needs redoing. If it resists and feels like a firm solid, the sand is fine and you are looking at a drainage or depth problem in specific areas β which is a much smaller repair.
2. Cause One: The Sand Never Cured
This is the most common reason for wholesale washout, and it is unfortunately the one that requires the most work to put right. Polymeric sand binds when water activates the polymer through the full depth of the joint. Several things prevent that.
Too Little Water
The most frequent cause. A light watering wets the top of the joint and activates the polymer there, creating a thin crust over dry, unbound sand beneath. The crust looks like success. The first heavy rain breaks through it and carries out everything underneath. Joints need saturating through their full depth, in several light passes rather than one.
Too Much Water, Too Fast
The opposite error produces a similar outcome. A heavy flow or a pressure nozzle washes sand and binder out of the joint before either can react, leaving under-filled joints with the polymer distributed onto the paver surface rather than through the sand.
Installed Into Damp Joints
Moisture present when the sand goes in starts the reaction early, so the polymer partially sets in clumps while you are still sweeping. Those clumps never bond to their neighbours and the joint has no continuous structure.
Cured Too Cold, or Rained On
Most polymeric sands need temperatures above roughly 50Β°F to cure properly. Below that the reaction stalls. Rain within the first 24 hours is equally destructive β it washes out uncured material wholesale, which is why the forecast matters as much as the technique.
In all four cases the remedy is the same and there is no shortcut: remove the failed sand from the joints entirely, let everything dry thoroughly, and reinstall correctly. Sweeping fresh polymeric sand on top of unbound sand produces a thin cured layer over loose material, and it fails again in the next storm.
3. Cause Two: Water Is Running Where It Should Not
If the sand is sound across most of the patio but consistently disappears from the same run of joints, the problem is not the sand. It is that a volume of water is being channelled across those joints repeatedly, and enough moving water will eventually erode even properly cured polymeric sand.
- A downspout discharging onto or near the pavers rather than into a drain or away from the surface.
- A patio that slopes toward the house or toward a low point rather than draining evenly away.
- Roof runoff dripping in a concentrated line along an eave without guttering.
- A settled area that has become a basin, collecting water that then finds a path out through the joints.
- Adjacent hardscape or lawn shedding water onto the paver surface in one concentrated place.
The fix has to address the water before it addresses the joints. Extend or redirect downspouts, correct the settled area, or add drainage β and only then repair the affected joints. Refilling joints while the water continues to run across them buys you one season at most, and you will be doing it again next spring.
A Useful Diagnostic
Watch the patio during actual rain.
Standing outside in a downpour for two minutes tells you more than any amount of inspection afterwards. You will see immediately where water is arriving, where it is pooling, and which path it takes off the surface. That path is almost always exactly where your joints are failing.
4. Cause Three: Shallow Joints and Missing Edge Restraint
Insufficient Depth
Polymeric sand develops its strength partly from bonding to itself and partly from mechanical grip against the paver faces on either side. A shallow fill has very little of the second, so the cured plug sits in the joint as a loose strip rather than being keyed into it, and water lifts it out. Most manufacturers want an inch to an inch and a half of depth minimum.
This is particularly common when polymeric sand is swept over old, compacted joint sand. The new material forms a thin cured cap, the old sand beneath stays loose, and the cap eventually breaks and washes away. Reaching proper depth means removing the old sand rather than covering it.
No Edge Restraint
A paver installation without proper edge restraint spreads slowly outward under traffic. As it spreads, the joints widen, and widening joints crack their cured sand and open a path for water. Washout that starts at the perimeter and works inward is usually this rather than a sand problem β the sand is being pulled apart, not washed out.
Edge restraint is a structural repair rather than a joint repair, and it needs doing before any joint work. Plastic or aluminium paver edging spiked into the base along the perimeter is the standard solution, and it stops the spreading that is causing the joint failure.
5. How to Repair Washed-Out Joints Properly
Establish the cause first
Press a screwdriver into a sound-looking joint. Crumbling means a curing failure across the installation; firm means a localised drainage, depth or edge problem.
Fix drainage or edge restraint before joints
Repairing joints while water still runs across them, or while the pavers are still spreading, means doing the work twice.
Remove all loose and failed sand
A shop vacuum, a joint scraper or a stiff brush. The joint needs to be empty and clean, not topped up over failed material.
Excavate to proper depth
At least an inch to an inch and a half. If old compacted sand is limiting depth, that has to come out too.
Let everything dry completely
Bone dry, which after any washing means a full dry day. Damp joints start the polymer reacting before the sand is in place.
Fill in stages with consolidation
Sweep in, vibrate or tamp, top up, and repeat until the joints hold at about an eighth of an inch below the paver surface.
Clear the paver faces thoroughly
Broom, then a leaf blower at a shallow angle. Sand left on the surface cures there and bonds to the stone.
Water in light passes and watch the runoff
Shower setting, several passes, saturating the full joint depth. Milky runoff means binder is moving onto the pavers β ease off.
One judgement call worth making honestly: if more than roughly a third of the joints have failed, removing and reinstalling the whole installation is usually less work and a far better result than patching in sections. Patched areas cure at different times and often differ slightly in colour, and the boundaries between old and new become the next place water finds a path.
6. Preventing Washout on the Reinstall
Whatever the original cause, the reinstall is your chance to remove every factor at once. These are the conditions under which polymeric sand reliably stays put.
- Joints excavated to a genuine inch to inch and a half of depth, with old compacted sand removed rather than covered.
- A product rated for your actual joint width, with a wide-joint formulation if your joints exceed the standard range.
- Bone dry joints and pavers, meaning a full dry day after any washing or rain.
- Air and surface temperatures above roughly 50Β°F, including the overnight low.
- A confirmed dry forecast for at least 24 hours after installation.
- Edge restraint installed along every unsupported perimeter so the pavers cannot spread.
- Downspouts and roof runoff directed away from the paver surface rather than onto it.
The Maintenance Habit That Prevents Recurrence
Even a perfect installation loses some joint material over the years, and the places it goes first are predictable: the perimeter, any channel where water runs, and wherever a snow shovel or plough blade passes. Catching that early is trivial and ignoring it is not.
Walk the patio each spring and look specifically at those three areas. A joint that has dropped a quarter inch takes a few minutes to top up and re-water. The same joint left for three years is empty to the base, has let water into the bedding layer beneath, and may have allowed the pavers either side to settle β which is a rebuild rather than a top-up.
7. Common Mistakes to Avoid
Topping Up Over Failed Sand
Sweeping fresh polymeric sand onto joints where the existing sand never cured gives you a thin bound crust over loose material. It looks repaired and it fails in the next storm. Remove the failed sand entirely before installing new β there is no version of this repair that works from the top down.
Repairing Joints Before Fixing Drainage
If a downspout or a slope is channelling water across a run of joints, even correctly cured polymeric sand will eventually erode there. Fix where the water goes first. Refilling joints while the water still crosses them buys one season and then you do it again.
Watering Only the Surface
A light watering activates the polymer at the top of the joint and leaves dry, unbound sand beneath a thin crust. This is the most common curing failure and it is invisible until the first heavy rain breaks the crust. Saturate the joint through its full depth in several light passes.
Sweeping Polymeric Sand Over Old Joint Sand
The new material cures as a shallow cap while the compacted sand beneath stays loose, so the cap has almost no mechanical grip and lifts out. Reaching the manufacturerβs minimum depth of roughly an inch to an inch and a half means excavating the old sand, not covering it.
Pressure Washing Paver Joints
A pressure washer removes cured polymeric sand from joints with very little effort, and people frequently create the washout they then try to diagnose. Clean pavers with a hose and a broom; if pressure washing is unavoidable, use a wide fan at low pressure and expect to top the joints up afterwards.
