The argument over spray versus squeegee is really an argument about film thickness. One method puts more sealer on your driveway than the other, and that single difference drives almost everything else — how long the coat lasts, how it looks, and how long you spend applying it.
1. The Short Answer: Which Should You Use?
For a residential asphalt driveway applied by a homeowner, a squeegee is the better choice in most cases. It forces sealer down into the surface voids and pores of the asphalt rather than resting a thin film on top, and it puts down a measurably heavier coat per pass. On the aged, porous, slightly rough asphalt that most homes have, that extra material is exactly what you want.
Spray application earns its place on smooth, tight, relatively new asphalt where a squeegee tends to skip and chatter, and on very large areas where the labour savings are real. It produces a more uniform cosmetic appearance and it is dramatically faster. What it does not do is build film thickness quickly, which is why almost every commercial crew that sprays follows immediately behind with a broom or squeegee to work the material in.
The Rule That Settles It

Asphalt that has oxidized to a grey, open, sandpaper-like texture has thousands of tiny voids that need filling. A squeegee fills them. A sprayer bridges them, and the sealer over those voids is the first thing to wear through. If you can see the individual aggregate stones clearly, use a squeegee.
There is also a practical constraint that decides the question for many people before they ever weigh the merits. Most consumer driveway sealers sold in pails are formulated with sand or fine aggregate already in suspension, which is what gives the cured coat its traction and body. That sand will clog a small consumer sprayer almost immediately. If you have already bought a sanded sealer, you are applying it with a squeegee whether you intended to or not.
2. How Squeegee Application Actually Works
A driveway squeegee is not the small window tool the name suggests. It is a wide blade, typically 24 to 36 inches, mounted on a long handle, and most sealing applicators are double-sided: a stiff rubber or neoprene blade on one edge and a coarse bristle brush on the other. The two edges do different jobs and good technique uses both.
You pour a ribbon of sealer directly onto the driveway, then pull it across the surface with the blade edge. The blade does two things at once. It meters the coat, scraping off excess so you are left with a consistent thickness rather than puddles, and it uses the pressure of that scraping action to press material down into the pores and hairline voids in the asphalt. That mechanical pressure is the entire advantage of the method. Sealer that has been forced into a void is anchored; sealer that has flowed over the top of one is only bridging it.
The brush edge is for the second pass and for textured areas. Flipping the applicator over and drawing the bristles back across the wet sealer breaks up any squeegee lines, works material into coarse spots the blade skipped, and leaves a slightly textured finish with better traction than a glass-smooth blade pull. On a driveway with any real surface roughness, brushing the second coat is what separates a job that looks deliberate from one that looks streaked.
What Squeegee Application Costs You
Effort, mainly. Pulling a full 4.75-gallon pail of sealer across a two-car driveway with a squeegee is genuine physical work, and thicker premium formulas with high solids content are noticeably harder to move than thin budget products. Most people find a standard two-car driveway takes two to four hours including preparation. You will feel it in your shoulders and lower back the following day.
The other cost is cosmetic consistency. A squeegee is operated by a human being with variable arm pressure, and it shows. Overlap marks, occasional blade lines, and slight variations in sheen are normal and largely disappear as the coat cures and weathers, but a squeegee finish inspected closely on day one will never look as machine-uniform as a sprayed one.
3. How Spray Application Actually Works
Spray application atomises the sealer and deposits it as a fine, even mist. Commercial sealcoating rigs use a tank, a pump and a wand, and the good ones agitate the tank continuously to keep solids in suspension. The result on a suitable surface is a strikingly uniform coat with no applicator marks anywhere, laid down in a fraction of the time a squeegee would take.
The catch is film thickness. A sprayed pass deposits a thin, even layer that follows the contour of whatever it lands on, including the contour of every open pore. It does not fill those pores, because nothing is pressing it in — the material simply arrives, sits, and cures. On smooth asphalt with few voids this is a non-issue and the result is excellent. On oxidized, porous asphalt it means the coat is thinnest exactly where the surface most needs protection.
This is why professional crews that spray very rarely stop at spraying. The standard commercial sequence is to spray a pass and then immediately follow with a broom or squeegee to work the material into the surface before it begins to set. That hybrid gets the speed of spraying and most of the penetration of squeegeeing, and it is the method behind most of the parking lots you have driven across.
The Equipment Problem for Homeowners
Spraying sealer is not a job for a garden sprayer or a paint sprayer. Sealer is far more viscous than paint and most formulations contain suspended solids that will destroy or block equipment not designed for them. A purpose-built sealcoating sprayer is a meaningful purchase or rental, and a rented unit arrives with whatever wear and residue the last user left in it.
Overspray is the other homeowner-scale problem. Atomised sealer drifts, and it does not wash off a garage door, a car panel, a brick wall or a concrete apron once it has cured. Professional crews mask and shield as a matter of routine. A first-time DIY sprayer typically discovers the drift radius after the fact.

The numbers below reflect the difference in how much material each method leaves behind. Sealcoat is designed to be applied thin — roughly a gallon per 80 to 100 square feet per coat — but within that range a squeegee consistently lands at the heavier end and a single spray pass at the lighter end.

Read that table with one thing in mind: durability follows film thickness, and film thickness follows method plus number of coats. A squeegee applied in two thin coats is the most reliable route to a coat that survives several freeze-thaw winters. A single sprayed coat is the least. A sprayed-and-broomed job in two coats sits close to the squeegee result, which is why it is the commercial standard.
What This Means for Longevity
Method changes how long the coat lasts, not how often you seal.
A properly applied two-coat job by either method sits in the normal two to three year resealing window for asphalt emulsion. What a thin single sprayed coat does is pull you toward the short end of that window, or under it, because the coat wears through at the high points and surface voids first.
5. Choosing Based on Your Driveway’s Condition
The right method is largely dictated by what your asphalt looks like today, not by preference. Walk the driveway and look at the surface texture closely before deciding.
Newly Paved and Still Black
Do not seal it at all yet. Fresh asphalt needs to cure and release its volatile oils before it will accept a sealer bond, and sealing too early traps those oils and leaves a soft, tacky surface. When it is ready, a new driveway is smooth and tight, and that is the surface where spraying genuinely shines.
Two to Eight Years Old, Slightly Grey
This is the sweet spot for maintenance sealing and either method works. The surface has opened up enough that a squeegee has something to bite into but not so much that spraying is wasteful. If you own the equipment, spray and broom. If you do not, squeegee and do not think twice about it.
Heavily Oxidized, Grey and Coarse
Squeegee, without qualification. When the binder has weathered away enough that the aggregate stones stand proud of the surface, you are looking at a very high void volume. Spraying such a surface consumes a surprising amount of material for very little film build, because the sealer runs down into the texture and leaves the peaks bare. Press it in with a blade instead.
Cracked or Crumbling
Neither method matters until the repairs are done. Sealer is a thin protective film and it cannot fill or bridge a structural crack. Fill everything wider than about an eighth of an inch with a dedicated crack filler, let it cure fully, and only then choose an application method for the surface coat.
6. How to Get a Professional Finish With Either Method
Most sealing failures are traceable to preparation and conditions rather than to the choice of applicator. These steps apply regardless of which method you land on.
Clean the surface completely
Sweep, then wash. Every loose stone, leaf fragment and dust film is a bond breaker. Sealer applied over dust adheres to the dust, not to the asphalt.
Treat oil and grease spots separately
Sealer will not bond over petroleum contamination. Degrease the spots, scrub them, and use an oil spot primer on anything that has soaked in.
Fill every crack and let it cure
Crack filler needs its own cure time, typically 24 to 48 hours, before sealer goes over it.
Check the forecast honestly
You need 24 to 48 hours without rain and overnight temperatures staying above 50°F. Uncured sealer washes away completely.
Mix the pail thoroughly
Solids settle in the pail. Stir until the consistency is uniform top to bottom, and stir again partway through application.
Apply two thin coats, not one thick one
Run the second coat perpendicular to the first. Two thin coats cure properly and outperform a single heavy coat in both appearance and lifespan.
Edge with a brush first
Cut in the perimeter with a disposable brush before working the main field, the same way you would cut in a wall before rolling it.
Keep traffic off for the full cure
Foot traffic after the surface is dry to the touch, vehicles after the full cure window on the label, typically 24 to 48 hours.
One detail worth emphasising: apply the second coat only after the first has dried, and expect the total project to span a weekend rather than an afternoon. The temptation to lay both coats in one day is strong and it is the single most common cause of a soft, slow-curing finish that tracks onto tyres and shoe soles for weeks.
7. Common Mistakes to Avoid
Spraying a Sanded Sealer
Sealers formulated with sand or fine aggregate in suspension will block a consumer sprayer within minutes, and thinning the product to get it through the equipment defeats the purpose by reducing the solids that form the protective film. Check the label before you commit to a method. If the product contains aggregate, it is a squeegee product.
Treating One Sprayed Coat as a Finished Job
A single sprayed pass looks complete the moment it goes down, because the colour change is immediate and dramatic. Colour is not coverage. That first coat is thin by design, and stopping there is why some sealing jobs look worn by the following spring while a neighbour who applied two coats is still black three winters later.
Squeegeeing Over a Dusty Surface
The blade pressure that makes squeegeeing effective also grinds surface dust into the sealer and directly into the bond line. On a surface that was swept but never washed, a squeegee can produce a worse bond than a sprayer would, because it mixes the contamination through the coat. Wash the driveway and let it dry fully.
Applying in the Wrong Weather
Below 50°F the sealer cannot cure and will remain soft or wash away in the first rain. Above roughly 90°F it skins over before it can bond and dries streaky. Rain inside 24 to 48 hours of application will strip an uncured coat entirely. Check the overnight lows as well as the daytime highs, and plan around a settled dry spell.
Ignoring Overspray Until It Has Cured
Atomised sealer travels further than people expect, and it bonds permanently to garage doors, siding, parked cars and concrete aprons. Mask and shield before the first pull of the trigger. Once cured, removal means solvents and abrasion on a surface that was never meant to be sealed.

Get those right and the applicator in your hands matters far less than the internet suggests.
