The single most useful distinction: asphalt sealer is a sacrificial layer you put on top, and concrete sealer is usually a treatment you put into the surface. That difference explains almost everything else, including why one turns your driveway black and the other leaves it looking much as it did.

2. What Asphalt Sealer Is Actually Doing

Asphalt is aggregate held together by bitumen, a petroleum binder. That binder is what makes the surface black, flexible and waterproof, and ultraviolet light steadily destroys it. As it oxidises, the surface fades from black to grey, becomes brittle, and eventually releases its aggregate — the loose stones underfoot on an old driveway.

Sealer addresses this by laying a fresh, opaque, sacrificial film across the top. That film absorbs the UV instead of the binder underneath, sheds water before it can reach the base, and resists the fuel and oil drips that dissolve bitumen. It wears away over two to three years and gets renewed, which is the entire maintenance model.

Why It Is Black and Opaque

The opacity is functional rather than cosmetic. A clear coating over asphalt would let UV straight through to the binder it is meant to protect. The dramatic visual restoration people associate with sealing is a side effect of the mechanism, not the purpose.

What It Cannot Do

  • It cannot fill cracks. It is a thin film with no structural capacity; cracks need dedicated filler first.
  • It cannot repair a failed base. Alligator cracking and sunken sections are structural problems.
  • It cannot restore ravelled asphalt. Once aggregate is coming loose, sealing does not glue it back.
  • It cannot be applied to concrete with any useful effect, for reasons covered below.

3. What Concrete Sealer Is Actually Doing

Concrete has the opposite problem. Its binder is portland cement, which is not damaged by UV in any comparable way — a concrete driveway does not fade and go brittle in the sun the way asphalt does. What destroys concrete is water getting into its pore structure, freezing, expanding and spalling the surface off, a process that de-icing salt accelerates dramatically.

So concrete sealers are built to stop water rather than to block light, and they come in two broad families that work in genuinely different ways.

Penetrating Sealers (Silane, Siloxane)

These soak into the concrete and react chemically with it, lining the pores with a water-repellent layer without forming a surface film. The concrete still looks like bare concrete, still breathes, and still has its original traction. Because the protection is inside the slab rather than on top of it, penetrating sealers are not worn off by traffic and commonly last five to ten years. This is the right choice for most exposed driveways in freeze-thaw and salt country.

Film-Forming Sealers (Acrylic, Epoxy, Urethane)

These sit on the surface as a coating, much as asphalt sealer does, and they usually add sheen and deepen the colour. They protect well against stains and give decorative concrete a wet look, but they can be slippery when wet, they wear where traffic is heaviest, and if moisture gets trapped beneath them they can cloud or peel. Typical life is three to five years.

For an open driveway that sees winter salt and freeze-thaw, a penetrating silane or siloxane sealer is almost always the better technical answer. Film-forming acrylics earn their place on stamped or decorative concrete where appearance is part of the point, and in covered areas where standing water and slip risk are not concerns.

4. What Happens If You Use the Wrong Product

Both mistakes are common, and they fail in different ways.

Asphalt Sealer on Concrete

It will go on, and it will look startling — an opaque black coating over a grey slab. The problem is bonding. Asphalt emulsion is formulated to bond with the bitumen already in asphalt pavement, and concrete offers it nothing chemically compatible to grip. The result is a coating sitting mechanically on a smooth, non-porous surface, and it peels, flakes and tracks. It also traps moisture trying to escape the slab, which accelerates spalling underneath. And it is essentially irreversible without aggressive mechanical removal.

Concrete Sealer on Asphalt

This fails more quietly. A penetrating silane or siloxane sealer is designed to react with cementitious material; asphalt has none, so there is nothing for it to react with. It does not meaningfully penetrate, does not block UV, and leaves the binder oxidising exactly as before. You will have spent money and a weekend and changed nothing measurable. A film-forming acrylic will at least form a layer, but a clear one, which lets UV through to the binder it should be shielding.

The One Legitimate Overlap

Some acrylics are rated for both surfaces.

A small number of acrylic sealers are formulated and explicitly labelled for use on asphalt and concrete alike, and they are genuinely useful on mixed driveways where an asphalt drive meets a concrete apron. Read the label rather than assuming. If a product does not name your surface, it is not for your surface.

5. How to Tell Which Surface You Have

Usually obvious, occasionally not — particularly on an old driveway that has been sealed several times, or one that has been resurfaced.

  • Asphalt is black or grey-black, slightly flexible underfoot in summer heat, and shows visible aggregate stones bound in a dark matrix.
  • Concrete is grey or off-white, rigid, and normally has control joints cut or tooled into it in a regular grid.
  • Asphalt softens noticeably on a hot day; concrete does not change at all.
  • Concrete driveways almost always have deliberate expansion and control joints. Asphalt driveways generally do not.
  • A previously sealed concrete slab can look black; check an edge, a broken corner or an unsealed margin for the true colour underneath.

Mixed driveways are common — an asphalt drive with a concrete apron at the garage, or a concrete pad with an asphalt approach. Seal each with the correct product for that section rather than looking for one product that covers both, unless you have specifically found an acrylic rated for both. The join will look slightly different either way, and matching the appearance is not worth using the wrong chemistry on half the area.

Once you have established that you need a concrete sealer rather than an asphalt one, there is a second decision that matters just as much, because the two families protect in genuinely different ways and suit different situations.

For Decorative Concrete, Consider a Film

Acrylics earn their place where appearance is part of the point. Stamped, stained or exposed-aggregate concrete usually looks considerably better under a film-forming acrylic, which deepens colour and adds the wet look that decorative work is often designed around. The trade-offs are real — shorter life, wear in traffic lanes, slip risk when wet, and the possibility of clouding if moisture is trapped beneath — but for a decorative patio or a covered area they are acceptable.

Epoxy and polyurethane belong indoors or under cover. Epoxy in particular is not UV-stable in most formulations and will amber and chalk in direct sunlight, which is why it is the standard choice for garage floors and the wrong choice for the driveway leading up to them.

Applying Penetrating Concrete Sealer to Asphalt

Silane and siloxane sealers work by reacting with cementitious material. Asphalt contains none, so the product does not meaningfully penetrate or protect, and it does nothing at all about the UV damage that is actually degrading the surface. The money and the weekend are simply gone.

Choosing a Film-Forming Sealer for an Exposed Concrete Driveway
