Do You Need to Sand a Deck Before Staining?

Usually not. A cleaner and a brightener do a better job on most decks than a weekend with a sander, and sanding done wrong actively stops stain from soaking in. Here are the five situations where the sander really does come out.

We have watched more decks ruined by an enthusiastic weekend with a sander than by skipping the sander altogether. Stain needs open grain. Sanding, done wrong, closes it.

1. The Short Answer

If your deck is structurally sound, has no peeling film finish on it, and simply looks tired, grey or dirty, you do not need to sand it. You need to clean it with a proper deck cleaner, neutralise and brighten it with an oxalic or citric acid brightener, let it dry for at least 48 hours, and stain it. That sequence produces a better result than sanding on the large majority of residential decks, and it produces it in a fraction of the time.

The reason is chemistry rather than laziness. Penetrating deck stains — the oil-based and most of the water-based semi-transparents — work by soaking into the top layer of wood fibre and locking pigment and resin into the cells. They need the pores of the wood to be open and clean. A sodium percarbonate cleaner lifts dirt, mildew and dead grey fibre out of the surface; the brightener that follows drops the pH back down, dissolves tannin and iron staining, and leaves the grain slightly raised and very open. That is precisely the surface a penetrating stain wants.

Sanding, by contrast, cuts the fibres flat. At coarse grits it leaves them torn and open, which is fine. At finer grits it burnishes them, and burnished wood repels liquid. Every year we hear from people who sanded a whole deck to 120 grit because that is what furniture gets, then watched the stain sit on top and wipe off with a rag a week later. They did more work than the cleaner-and-brightener crowd and got a worse result.

So the honest default is: clean and brighten, do not sand. What follows is the shorter list of situations where that default is wrong, and how to sand properly when it is.

2. The Five Times You Do Need to Sand

A Peeling Film Finish That Stripper Will Not Lift

Solid-colour stains, deck paints and some heavily built-up semi-solids form a film on the surface rather than soaking in. When that film starts to peel, you cannot stain over it and you cannot clean it off. The first tool is a chemical stripper — a sodium hydroxide product for oil and alkyd finishes, or a solvent-based remover for stubborn acrylics — followed by a brightener to neutralise. Sometimes, though, two rounds of stripper leave islands of old finish bonded so tightly they will not budge, particularly on solid acrylic that has been baked on for a decade. That is when the sander earns its keep. You sand the remaining film off at 36 to 60 grit, feather the edges into bare wood, then finish the whole area at 60 to 80 so the absorption matches.

Fuzzy or Furred Boards After Pressure Washing

The most common reason a homeowner ends up sanding is that they created the problem with a pressure washer. Run a zero-degree or 15-degree tip too close to softwood at 3,000 PSI and it blasts the soft earlywood out from between the harder latewood rings, leaving a raised, fuzzy surface that feels like felt when it dries. That fuzz is loose fibre. Stain it and the fibre absorbs the stain, then breaks off in the first season, taking the colour with it. A single pass with 60 to 80 grit knocks the fuzz off and leaves solid wood underneath. Raised Grain, Splinters, or Weathered Grey You Want to Look New

A deck that has gone ten or fifteen years without a finish develops a specific texture. The surface fibres are dead and grey, the grain has lifted into ridges, and there are splinters at every board edge and around every fastener. A cleaner and brightener will remove the grey colour and get you a perfectly stainable surface, but it will not flatten those ridges or remove splinters. If the goal is a deck that is safe under bare feet and looks like new wood under a semi-transparent, you have to cut back to sound fibre. This is the one case where a full-deck sanding at 36 or 50 grit followed by 60 to 80 is the correct job rather than an over-reaction. Expect to remove a sixteenth of an inch or more of surface, and expect the boards to look dramatically better for it.

Smooth New Boards With Mill Glaze

New lumber comes off the planer with a surface that has been compressed and heated by the knives. On some boards, particularly kiln-dried cedar and redwood and some dense treated pine, that creates a hard, slick skin the industry calls mill glaze. Water beads on it. So does stain. A cleaner and brightener will often open mill glaze enough; the acid brightener in particular roughens the surface. Test it: after cleaning and drying, sprinkle water on a board. If it soaks in within a minute, you are fine. If it beads for five, you have glaze, and a light pass at 60 to 80 grit is the fastest fix. This is a scuff, not a full sanding — you are breaking the skin, not removing material.

Spot Repairs and Handrails

Two smaller cases. When you replace a handful of boards in an old deck, the new boards will absorb stain differently from the old ones no matter what you do, but a scuff at 80 grit on the new boards and a brightener on everything narrows the gap. And handrails, which people actually touch and lean on, benefit from being sanded even when the deck boards do not. A cap rail full of raised grain and splinters is a hazard, and rails are small enough that a random orbit sander at 80 grit handles them in an hour.

3. Why Sanding Can Make Things Worse

The central problem is grit. Wood sanded at 100, 120 or 150 grit looks and feels lovely, and it is exactly what you want under a film-forming finish like polyurethane on an interior floor. Under a penetrating exterior stain it is a disaster. The fine abrasive shears off the fibre ends and packs the pores with dust, and the friction heat glazes the surface. Water-based stains sit on top and dry to a thin, weak film. Oil stains stay wet on the surface for days, then wipe off. Our rule on horizontal deck boards is never finer than 80 grit, and 60 is usually better. If you would not want to sit on it in shorts, it is about right.

The second problem is unevenness. If you sand the traffic lane in the middle of the deck and leave the edges, or sand around the fasteners and leave the field, the sanded areas absorb stain at a different rate from the unsanded areas. On a semi-transparent that shows up as blotching you can see from the street: dark patches where the grain was cut open at 60 grit, lighter ones where the weathered surface took less. The fix is to treat whole boards, or preferably the whole deck, to the same grit. Sanding one board end to end is fine. Sanding half of it is not.

Then there is dust. Sanding a 300 square foot deck at 50 grit generates a startling volume of it, and it goes everywhere — into the siding, the gutters, the lawn, the neighbour's pool. On treated lumber, that dust is not something you want to breathe or leave in a vegetable bed. Every particle that stays on the deck surface is a particle sitting between the stain and the wood, so you also have to blow or vacuum the entire deck clean before you open a can, and you have to hope the wind does not undo it.

And finally, time. A cleaner-and-brightener prep on a mid-sized deck is a three-hour job plus drying. A full sanding is a full day, often two, with a tool rental on top, plus the same cleaning and drying steps you would have done anyway. The argument for sanding has to justify that, and on a sound deck it simply does not.

4. Grit Selection and Tools

Grits

Start coarse when there is something to remove: 36 grit for thick paint or solid stain, 50 or 60 for weathered grey and raised grain. Finish at 60 to 80 on deck boards. Do not be tempted to go on to 100 or 120 to make it feel nicer; the stain will punish you. On handrails, balusters and cap rails you can finish at 80 or even 100 because those surfaces get touched and are usually stained with a brush, which works product in harder than a pad on a floor. Change paper often. Dull paper burnishes rather than cuts, which is the exact effect you are trying to avoid, and a clogged 60-grit disc behaves like a 120.

Random Orbit Sander

A 5-inch or 6-inch random orbit sander is the right tool for rails, stairs, board ends and detail work. It is the wrong tool for the deck surface itself unless the deck is tiny; a 5-inch pad takes a full day to cover 300 square feet at coarse grit and your knees will not forgive you. Choose one with a dust port and hook it to a shop vacuum. Hook-and-loop discs in 40, 60 and 80 grit are cheap in packs of 50 — buy more than you think you need.

Orbital Floor Sander

For deck boards, rent a 12-inch square-pad orbital floor sander from Home Depot or a local tool hire. It is the same machine used to screen hardwood floors, it stands up, it covers ground fast, and it is very hard to gouge with because it does not have the aggression of a drum sander. Fit it with 36 or 50 grit paper for removal and 60 or 80 to finish. The pad rides over slightly cupped boards without digging in, which matters on an old deck where no two boards are level. Run it along the grain, overlapping passes by a third, and keep it moving.

Drum Sander

A drum sander removes material fast — too fast for most decks. It is a good choice only for a deck where you are genuinely taking the surface down to fresh wood through heavy weathering and every board is dead level. On a deck with cupped boards it flattens the crowns and misses the valleys, and on a deck with raised fasteners it will destroy the paper and possibly the drum on the first screw head. If you rent one, sink every fastener first and start with the coarsest paper you can, because a drum with fine paper glazes wood faster than anything else on this list.

Pole Sander and Sanding Screens

For the mill-glaze scuff on a new deck, or for knocking fuzz off a furred one, you do not need power at all. A drywall pole sander with an 80-grit screen, or a floor buffer with a 60 to 80 grit sanding screen, opens the surface without removing meaningful wood and produces very little dust. It is slow for heavy removal but perfect for the light-touch jobs, and a floor buffer with a screen is the professional's answer to "the stain will not soak in".

5. The Right Sequence: Wash, Dry, Sand, Blow Off, Stain

The order matters more than most people realise, and the most common error is sanding first. Sanding a dirty deck grinds the dirt and mildew into the fresh fibre you have just exposed and clogs the paper in minutes. Always wash first.

Step one: clean. Apply a sodium percarbonate deck cleaner (our picks are in the best deck cleaner guide), let it dwell for ten to fifteen minutes without drying, scrub with a stiff brush and rinse with a garden hose or a pressure washer on a fan tip at low pressure. If you are stripping an old finish, this is where the stripper goes instead.

Step two: brighten, or not yet. If you are going to sand heavily, skip the brightener for now; you will remove the surface it treated. If you are only scuffing for mill glaze or fuzz, brighten now, because the acid opens the grain and may save you the sanding altogether.

Step three: dry for 48 hours. Sanding wet wood is a waste of paper and produces a gummy, fibrous surface that is worse than what you started with. Two dry days in warm weather; longer if it has been cool or humid, or if the deck is shaded. A cheap pin moisture meter reading under 15 per cent is the real test.

Step four: sink the fasteners. Every proud nail head and every screw sitting above the surface will tear your paper and, on a drum sander, can spark. Walk the deck with a hammer and a drill and set anything that catches a fingernail.

Step five: sand. Boards with the floor sander, coarse then finish grit, along the grain. Rails, stairs and edges with the random orbit. Feather any spot where you have removed old finish so there is no visible step.

Step six: remove the dust completely. Leaf blower first, then a shop vacuum with a floor brush along the board gaps, then a final blow. Do it on a still day. Wipe rails with a slightly damp cloth. Any dust you leave becomes a barrier between wood and stain.

Step seven: brighten if you skipped it, then rinse and allow another 24 to 48 hours. This is optional after sanding, but on a heavily sanded deck a brightener evens out the colour of the freshly cut wood and opens any areas the paper glazed. It is cheap insurance.

Step eight: stain. Follow the normal process in how to stain a deck, watching the weather and back-brushing everything. Freshly sanded wood is thirsty and will take noticeably more product than a weathered surface, so buy accordingly — our coverage guide has the numbers.

6. Pressure-Treated Wood and Composite Decking

Sanding Pressure-Treated Lumber

Modern treated lumber in the US uses copper-based preservatives — ACQ, copper azole, or micronised copper — rather than the chromated copper arsenate that was withdrawn from residential use in 2004. It is far less toxic than the old stuff, but the dust is still an irritant and the copper compounds are not something to inhale or spread around a garden. Wear a properly fitted N95 or P100 respirator, not a paper dust mask. Use tools with dust extraction into a shop vac with a fine filter. Work with the wind at your back and cover any beds or vegetable plots. Bag the dust for the household waste; never burn treated wood or its dust, and never compost it.

Treated pine also has a particular quirk: it is often sold wet, and wet treated wood sands terribly. If your deck is new treated lumber, the real question is not whether to sand it but whether it is dry enough to stain at all, which is a bigger topic than this article. Test for absorption with the water sprinkle; if it beads because the wood is still saturated with treatment solution, no amount of sanding will help and you need to wait. Composite and PVC Decking

Do not sand composite. This bears repeating because people do it every spring. Composite decking, whether it is an older uncapped board or a modern co-extruded product from Trex, TimberTech or Fiberon, has a manufactured surface. On capped boards that surface is a thin polymer shell over the wood-plastic core, and a sander goes through it in seconds, exposing a core that stains, absorbs water and looks nothing like the rest of the deck. On uncapped boards, sanding removes the factory texture and leaves a smeared, plasticky finish that never recovers. It also voids the warranty on every brand we have checked.

Composite is not designed to be stained either. If an old uncapped composite has faded, there are dedicated composite deck coatings, but they are film finishes applied over a cleaned surface, not a sanded one. Clean composite with a composite-specific cleaner or a mild soap and a soft brush, rinse, and stop. The question in this article's title does not apply.

7. Cost, Time and the Alternatives

What Sanding a 300 Square Foot Deck Actually Costs

For a typical 300 square foot deck with 40 feet of railing, budget as follows. A 12-inch orbital floor sander rents for a day at roughly the cost of a good dinner out, and a drum sander a little more. Paper for the floor sander — a dozen sheets across two grits — is a similar figure again. A pack of 50 random orbit discs in mixed grits, a respirator, and a box of shop vac bags round it out. All in, most people spend somewhere in the low hundreds of dollars on the sanding stage alone, before a drop of cleaner or stain. Time-wise, allow a full working day for the sanding with two people, or a day and a half alone, plus the two drying windows either side. Hiring it out typically adds a dollar or two per square foot on top of the staining quote, which is why professional deck refinishers almost never sand unless they have to.

Alternative One: Cleaner Plus Brightener

The default, and the right answer for most decks. A sodium percarbonate cleaner followed by an oxalic acid brightener strips dirt, mildew and dead grey fibre and leaves the grain open. Products from Restore-A-Deck, DEFY, Cabot and Behr all follow this two-step chemistry, and the difference between them is mostly concentration and price. Cost for a 300 square foot deck is a small fraction of the sanding budget, and the whole job is done in an afternoon plus drying time.

Alternative Two: Chemical Stripper

For old penetrating finishes that have gone dark and blotchy, or thin film finishes that are failing, a stripper does what sanding does without the dust. It is a caustic product, so gloves, eye protection and care around plants are non-negotiable, and it must be followed by a brightener to neutralise the pH or the new stain will fail. It will not remove every solid acrylic, which is where the sander comes back in as a spot tool rather than a whole-deck approach.

Alternative Three: Buffing With a Screen

The trade solution to a deck that will not absorb: a rented 17-inch floor buffer fitted with a 60 or 80 grit sanding screen under a driver pad. It scuffs the surface evenly, removes fuzz and glaze, produces very little dust, and covers a 300 square foot deck in under an hour. It does not remove finish or level raised grain — it is a scuff, not a sanding — but for the mill-glaze and furred-wood cases it is faster and gentler than any sander and it leaves an ideal surface for stain.

When to Hire It Out

If the deck is large, elevated more than a storey, has an old solid finish that has failed everywhere, or is built from a dense hardwood like ipe that eats sandpaper, this is a job worth pricing with a professional refinisher. They will bring a floor machine, extraction and the experience to know which boards are worth saving. For a ground-level softwood deck under 400 square feet, it is squarely within reach of a weekend and a rental counter.

Common Mistakes

Sanding to 120 grit or finer

It feels like a job well done and it closes the grain shut. Penetrating stain sits on top, stays tacky, and wipes off. Stop at 60 to 80 on boards.

Sanding before washing

Grinds dirt and mildew into fresh fibre and clogs paper in minutes. Clean first, dry for 48 hours, then sand.

Spot-sanding the traffic lane only

Sanded and unsanded wood absorb stain at different rates. The result is blotching you can see from the street. Treat whole boards or the whole deck.

Staining over the dust

Every particle left on the surface is a barrier between wood and stain. Blow, vacuum the gaps, blow again, on a still day.

Putting a sander on composite

Destroys the cap, voids the warranty and cannot be undone. Composite is cleaned, not sanded, and it is not stained either.
