How to Strip Deck Stain
It is the least pleasant job in deck maintenance, and a good number of the decks that get stripped never needed it. Start by finding out which kind you have.

Stripping is a full weekend of caustic chemistry, scrubbing and rinsing, and it is genuinely necessary in about half the cases where people do it. The first question is not how, but whether.
1. Do You Actually Need to Strip?
The test is simple. Sprinkle water on the deck in several places. If it soaks in everywhere within a minute or two, the old finish has worn away and there is nothing left to strip — a clean and a recoat is all you need. If it beads anywhere, that area still has a working coating on it and nothing new will bond there.

The fifth row is the one people miss. A deck that has worn bare down the traffic path while the sheltered perimeter still repels water is the most common real reason to strip, because the two zones will absorb stain at completely different rates and dry two visibly different colours. 2. How Deck Strippers Actually Work
The common deck strippers are strongly alkaline, usually built on sodium hydroxide, sometimes with sodium metasilicate and surfactants. They work by breaking down the binder — saponifying the oils in an oil-based finish, or attacking the resin in a water-based one — until the coating loses its grip on the wood and can be lifted with a brush.
Two things follow from that chemistry. First, the stripper has to stay wet to keep working; the moment it dries on the surface it stops, and dried stripper is harder to remove than the stain was. Second, it does not care that the wood is also organic, which is why it darkens boards, raises the grain, and must be neutralised afterwards rather than merely rinsed.
Solvent-based strippers exist as well and are more common for coatings than for penetrating stains. They dissolve rather than saponify, work on some films that alkaline products cannot touch, and bring stronger fumes and more demanding disposal with them. For most deck work the alkaline product is the right starting point, with a coatings-grade stripper held in reserve for solid stain and paint.
3. Choosing the Right Stripper for the Coating
Match the product to what is on the deck rather than buying whatever is strongest.
- Oil-based penetrating stain. A standard sodium hydroxide deck stripper handles it, usually in one application.
- Water-based penetrating stain. The same strippers work but often need a longer dwell and more agitation.
- Solid stain. Expect a stripper sold specifically for solid coatings, and expect two applications.
- Deck paint. The hardest case. Coatings-grade stripper, multiple passes, and scraping — many people sand instead.
- Unknown finish. Test a square foot in an out-of-the-way corner before committing to a product or a plan.
Always do that test patch, even when you are confident. It tells you the dwell time this particular coating needs, whether one application will do it, and how much scrubbing is involved — all of which determine whether the job takes a morning or a weekend. It costs twenty minutes and it has saved a great many people from starting a two-day job at four in the afternoon.
4. Stripping, Step by Step
Work in overcast, mild conditions if you possibly can. Direct sun on the boards dries the stripper before it has finished working and is the single biggest cause of a frustrating, patchy result.
- Clear the deck and protect everything. Mask siding, cover metal railing parts, and soak the plants below and around the deck, then cover them.
- Dampen the deck. A wet surface helps the stripper spread and slows it drying out.
- Apply generously in sections. Take on only as much as you can keep wet and rinse within the dwell time — often a quarter of the deck at a time.
- Keep it wet for the full dwell. Fifteen to thirty minutes typically, misting with water whenever the surface starts to dry.
- Agitate along the grain with a stiff synthetic brush. The coating should lift as a slurry rather than needing to be forced.
- Rinse thoroughly before moving to the next section, so the slurry does not dry back onto the boards.
- Reapply where needed. Stubborn patches want a second application, not more scrubbing — brute force damages the wood, chemistry does not.
That last point is the one that separates a good result from a chewed-up deck. When a section refuses to release, the instinct is to attack it with the brush or turn the pressure washer up. Both take wood off. A second application with a proper dwell almost always wins instead, and leaves the boards intact.
Wear the Right Protection
Sodium hydroxide strippers cause chemical burns and serious eye injury. Chemical-resistant gloves, sealed goggles rather than glasses, long sleeves and closed shoes are the minimum, and a deck covered in caustic slurry is genuinely slippery. Keep a hose running nearby for immediate rinsing.
5. Neutralising, Which Is Not Optional
Rinsing removes the stripper you can see. It does not restore the wood's pH, and a stripped deck left un-neutralised is strongly alkaline at the surface. That shows up as darkened, dull-looking boards, closed grain that resists the new stain, and in some cases a reaction with the finish you apply.
An oxalic acid brightener fixes it. Apply it to the damp deck immediately after stripping, let it dwell for the stated time, agitate lightly, and rinse thoroughly. The colour change is immediate and often startling — the grey, blotchy, chemically abused surface comes back to something close to fresh wood. That visual is a useful confirmation that the neutralising has worked.
Do not treat brightening as a cosmetic step you can skip if the deck already looks all right. It is chemistry, not appearance, and it is the difference between a new stain that penetrates evenly and one that goes on patchy over an alkaline surface. 6. Sanding and Touch-Up After Stripping
Stripping raises the grain. That is normal and expected, and it usually means a light sanding at 60 to 80 grit once the deck is fully dry. Do not go finer: an exterior stain needs an open surface to penetrate, and burnishing the wood smooth undoes much of what stripping achieved.
Sanding is also the practical answer to the last stubborn remnants. On a deck that is 95 percent clean, a third chemical application over the whole surface is wasteful and hard on the wood; spot-sanding the remaining patches is faster and gentler. Feather the edges of those areas so they do not read as hard-edged shapes under a transparent stain.
Then clean up completely. Sanding dust in the grain is another barrier between stain and wood, and it is the same colour as the deck so it is easy to overlook. Vacuum, sweep out the gaps between boards, and give the deck a final rinse if it has been sanded heavily. Then dry it again — a stripped deck has been soaked repeatedly and needs a genuinely long drying period.
7. Sanding Instead of Stripping
Sanding the coating off entirely is a legitimate alternative, and on a small deck it is often the better one. It uses no chemicals, produces no caustic runoff to keep off the plants, leaves no neutralising step, and does not soak the boards, so the deck is ready to stain far sooner.
The costs are real, though. It is slow, it is dusty, a random orbit sander eats through discs on a gummy coating, and the areas a sander cannot reach — between boards, around balusters, into corners — still need hand work or chemistry. On anything much beyond a modest platform, most people find chemical stripping followed by a light sand faster overall.
One case where sanding clearly wins is deck paint. Paint films tend to resist alkaline strippers, gum up under solvent strippers, and come away in maddening fragments, and many people who set out to strip a painted deck end up sanding it anyway. If the deck is painted, consider going straight to the sander, or reconsider whether the deck needs to come back to bare wood at all.
8. When to Stop and Go Solid Instead
There is a point at which stripping stops being worth it. If the deck has had multiple coats of solid stain over the years, if the previous finish was paint, or if the boards are old enough that aggressive removal would do real damage, then chasing bare wood can cost a weekend and still leave a surface that will never look uniform under a transparent finish.
The honest alternative is to accept the deck's history and go the other way: remove everything loose, sand the edges of the sound film so it does not telegraph through, clean, and apply a fresh solid stain. A well-prepared solid coat over a sound existing solid coat is a legitimate, durable system, and it converts a two-day strip into a normal maintenance job.
What you give up is optionality, since going back to a semi-transparent look later becomes even harder. That is a real cost and worth weighing rather than dismissing. How Much Stripper You Need and What It Costs
Coverage rates for deck strippers are considerably lower than people expect, because the product has to go on heavily enough to stay wet for the dwell time. Plan on the lower end of whatever the label claims, and buy more than the arithmetic suggests — running out halfway through a section with the chemical already working is a genuinely bad position to be in, and the partial application will have to be redone.
Budget for the brightener at the same time, since you need it in the same session, and for a second container of stripper if the test patch suggested two applications. Add replacement brush heads, because a stiff brush used on a caustic slurry does not stay stiff for long, and disposable gloves get holed more often than you would think.
Set against that, weigh what a contractor charges to strip and prepare a deck, which is usually a substantial fraction of a full stain job because it is the labour-heavy part. For a large or multi-level deck, or one carrying old paint, getting a quote is worth doing before committing your weekend. The chemistry is not difficult but the scale is what defeats people.
Runoff, Disposal and the Garden
Everything you scrub off the deck ends up somewhere, and on a raised deck that somewhere is the ground directly beneath it. Caustic stripper slurry carrying pigment and binder is not good for planting beds or lawn, so the sensible approach is dilution: soak the ground before you start, cover what you can with plastic, and flood the area with clean water after each section rather than letting it sit.
Do not let concentrated rinse water run into a storm drain. On a ground-level deck adjacent to a driveway, that is an easy mistake to make, and it is worth directing runoff onto grass or gravel where it can dilute instead. Check whether your municipality has specific guidance, because some do for exterior coatings work.
Leftover product should be kept in its original container and disposed of through a household hazardous waste facility rather than poured out. Rinse the empties well before recycling. None of this is onerous, but stripper is meaningfully more hazardous than the stain that follows it, and it deserves being treated that way.
9. Common Mistakes to Avoid
Letting the Stripper Dry on the Deck
An alkaline stripper works only while it is wet. Once it dries it stops, bonds the dissolved coating back to the surface, and becomes harder to remove than the original stain. Work in shade, take smaller sections, and mist with water whenever the surface starts to look dull.
Skipping the Brightener
Rinsing removes the residue but leaves the wood strongly alkaline, which darkens the boards, keeps the grain closed and can react with the new stain. Oxalic acid brightener restores the pH in twenty minutes, and the colour change tells you it has worked.
Reaching for the Pressure Washer
Pressure high enough to lift bonded coating also cuts into softwood, leaving gouges and a furred surface that then needs sanding. Use a washer to rinse a chemically stripped deck if you like, but not as the stripping method itself.
Stripping a Deck That Did Not Need It
A faded penetrating stain that lets water soak in has already worn away, and cleaning is enough. Stripping it anyway costs a weekend, soaks the boards, raises the grain and gains nothing. Do the water test before opening anything.
Staining Too Soon Afterwards
Stripping soaks the boards repeatedly, so a stripped deck holds far more water than a washed one and needs at least two days, often three or four in cool or humid weather. Staining over that trapped moisture undoes the entire weekend's work.
