How to Prep a Deck for Staining

A mid-priced stain on a properly prepared deck beats a premium stain on a dirty one, every time. This is the part of the job that decides the outcome.

Preparation is not about making the deck look clean. It is about removing every layer that would sit between the stain and the wood, and then getting the wood dry enough to accept what you put on it. Everything below serves those two goals.

1. Assess What You Actually Have

There is no single preparation routine, because decks arrive at this point in very different states. Walk yours and answer three questions before spending anything.

Most decks fall into the first two rows, which is good news: cleaning and brightening is a Saturday, not a project. The rows that change the schedule are the ones involving a film that is still present, because stripping adds a day and a genuinely unpleasant hour or two.

2. The Water Test, and What It Is Really Telling You

Sprinkle a tablespoon of water onto the boards in five or six places: a sunny spot, a shaded spot, a walkway, under where a chair sat, and near the house. Watch for a minute or two.

  • Soaks in and darkens the wood. The surface is open. Once it is clean and dry, stain will penetrate.
  • Beads and sits. Something is repelling it — an old finish, mill glaze, or wood that is still saturated. Stain will not penetrate here.
  • Different results in different places. The most important finding of all, and the reason to test in more than one spot.

That last case is what produces blotchy finishes. A deck where the walkway has worn bare while the sheltered edges still hold their old coating will absorb stain at two different rates and dry two different colours. Preparation has to bring the whole surface to the same condition, which usually means stripping the areas that still repel rather than hoping the difference will even out. It will not.

Repeat this test at the end of preparation, before you open the stain. It is the same test doing a different job: first it tells you what you are dealing with, then it tells you whether you are ready.

3. Repairs, Fasteners and the Gaps Between Boards

Do the carpentry before the chemistry. Set any protruding nail heads or screws below the surface, replace fasteners that are rusting badly, and swap out boards that are split, soft or cupped enough to hold standing water. A new board can be cleaned and stained with the rest, and it is far less work now than after the deck is finished.

Clear the gaps between the boards with a putty knife or a thin scraper. The compacted debris in those gaps holds moisture against board edges around the clock, and edge rot is a common way decking fails while the faces still look fine. It also blocks drainage, which matters when you rinse the deck later.

While you are down there, look at the structure. Check the ledger board where the deck attaches to the house, probe any dark or soft spots with a screwdriver, and look for corrosion on hangers and connectors. None of this is part of staining, but it is the one time a year you have the deck bare and empty, and structural problems only get more expensive from here.

4. Which Cleaner You Actually Need

"Deck cleaner" covers several different chemistries that do different jobs, and buying the wrong one wastes a weekend.

The bleach line is worth dwelling on, because it is the traditional advice and it is wrong for this job. Household chlorine bleach kills surface mildew, but it also breaks down lignin and cellulose, leaches natural colour out of the wood, corrodes fasteners, and leaves the grey oxidised layer exactly where it was. The short version is that a stripper removes the coating and a cleaner removes what is on the wood, and a deck with a failing solid stain needs both, in that order.

5. Washing the Deck

Wet the boards down first so the cleaner spreads evenly rather than soaking straight into dry wood in patches. Wet the plants around the deck as well, and rinse them again afterwards. Then apply the cleaner in manageable sections — a section you can scrub and rinse before the chemical dries is the right size, which on a hot day may be smaller than you expect.

Let it dwell for the label time, usually ten to fifteen minutes, keeping it damp with a light mist if the sun is drying it out. Then scrub along the grain with a stiff synthetic brush on a pole. This scrubbing is what actually removes the loosened grey layer; the chemical alone only softens it. Rinse thoroughly, and be generous with the rinse — cleaner residue left on the wood interferes with the stain later.

On pressure washers, the honest advice is that most decks do not need one and many are damaged by one. If you use one, treat it as a rinsing tool rather than a cutting tool: under about 1,500 psi, a 25 or 40 degree fan tip, kept moving, held a foot or more from the surface, working with the grain. 6. Brightening: The Step Most People Skip

Cleaners and strippers are alkaline, and they leave the wood surface alkaline after rinsing. That matters for three reasons: alkaline wood darkens, particularly cedar and redwood; it can react with some stains; and the raised pH keeps the grain partially closed. A brightener — almost always oxalic acid based — reverses all three in about twenty minutes.

Apply it to the still-damp deck, let it dwell for the stated time, agitate lightly with the brush, and rinse well. The colour change is immediate and dramatic on a deck that has just been cleaned, which is why the product is called a brightener, but the appearance is a side effect rather than the point. The point is neutral pH and open grain.

Brightener is also the fix for the black streaks that appear around fasteners on cedar, redwood and other tannin-rich woods. Those marks are a reaction between the wood's natural tannins and iron, and oxalic acid lifts them where scrubbing will not. If your deck has them, do not skip this step and do not stain over them — they will show through everything except a solid colour.

7. Sanding, Only Where It Is Needed

Sanding an entire deck is hard work and usually unnecessary. Sand where there is a specific problem to solve: raised fibres after an aggressive wash, mill glaze on new smooth lumber that still beads water after cleaning, splinters on handrails and stair treads, or residue left behind after stripping.

Use 60 to 80 grit and stop there. This is counter-intuitive to anyone used to finishing interior woodwork, where finer is better, but exterior stain needs an open surface to soak into. Sanding to 120 or beyond burnishes the wood, closes the pores, and produces a deck that rejects stain in exactly the way you were trying to fix. A random orbit sander or a pole sander does the flat work; a sanding sponge handles railings and edges.

Clean up thoroughly afterwards. Sanding dust sitting in the grain is another layer between the stain and the wood, and it is easy to leave behind because it is the same colour as the deck. Vacuum, then blow or sweep, then check the gaps between boards again. If you sanded after brightening, a light rinse and another drying period is sensible before staining.

8. Drying, and Why It Takes Longer Than You Think

Wood dries from the outside in. That single fact explains most of the failures in this category. Twelve hours after washing, the surface can feel bone dry while the boards hold enough moisture a few millimetres down to stop stain penetrating and, in some cases, to cloud an oil-based finish as it tries to cure over trapped water.

Plan on 24 hours minimum after a light wash and 48 or more after a pressure wash, and extend both in humid, cool or shaded conditions. A deck in deep shade in autumn can need three or four days. There is no penalty for waiting and a real penalty for not, so if the weather gives you an extra dry day before staining, take it.

The water test settles it. Sprinkle water in several places, including the shadiest and slowest-drying part of the deck, and only proceed when it soaks in everywhere. New Decks and Mill Glaze

A brand new deck looks like the cleanest surface you will ever stain, and it frequently is the least receptive. Planing and milling burnish the wood surface, crushing and sealing the outer cells into what is known as mill glaze, and that glassy layer repels finish exactly the way an old sealer would. Add the dirt picked up in the lumber yard and, on treated boards, the moisture from the treatment process itself, and a new deck often needs more preparation than a weathered one.

The sequence is the same but the emphasis shifts. Clean it to remove yard dirt and any surface residue, then run the water test. If water soaks in, you are ready once the boards are dry. If it beads, the choice is between letting the deck weather for a few months, which breaks down the glaze naturally, or sanding at 60 to 80 grit to cut through it. Both work; weathering is free and sanding is fast.

Pressure-treated lumber adds a second variable, which is the water still in the wood from the treatment plant. It is entirely possible for new treated boards to be too wet to stain for weeks or months after installation, and no amount of preparation changes that — it just needs time. Safety and Protecting Everything Nearby

Deck strippers and cleaners are genuinely caustic. Sodium hydroxide strippers burn skin and damage eyes on contact, and even the milder percarbonate cleaners are unpleasant to get in a cut or an eye. Chemical-resistant gloves, sealed eye protection and long sleeves are the minimum, and closed shoes matter more than people expect on a wet deck covered in slippery chemistry.

Plants are the most common casualty. Wet the surrounding foliage before you start, cover what you can with plastic sheeting, and rinse everything down thoroughly when you finish each section rather than at the end of the day. Grass immediately below a raised deck takes the runoff from every rinse and is worth soaking well before and after.

Protect the house too. Mask siding adjacent to the deck, particularly vinyl, which some strippers will mark, and cover any metal or composite railing components that are not being coated. Aluminium and anodised finishes react badly to strong alkaline cleaners. Ten minutes of masking saves a repair that no amount of staining will hide.

How Much Preparation Is Enough?

There is a point of diminishing returns, and it is worth naming so that the job stays proportionate. Preparation is finished when the entire deck surface accepts water at roughly the same rate, when there is no loose fibre or residue on the boards, and when the wood is dry through. It does not need to look new, and chasing an even colour with more cleaning usually just removes more wood.

Some marks are permanent and will show through anything but a solid stain: deep iron staining, weathering that has cut into the grain, mismatched replacement boards, and old paint drips ground into the surface. Recognising these early lets you make the right decision about opacity rather than sanding a deck to death trying to remove them. It is also worth remembering that preparation done well makes the next one easier. A deck that was properly cleaned, brightened and stained with a penetrating product will wear evenly and need only a wash before its next coat, which is a Saturday rather than a project. A deck that was stained over a half-prepared surface fails unevenly and drags you back into stripping. The effort compounds in whichever direction you send it.

9. Common Mistakes to Avoid

Skipping the Brightener

Cleaners leave the wood alkaline, which darkens some species, keeps the grain partially closed and can interfere with the stain. Brightening takes twenty minutes, neutralises the surface, and lifts the black tannin marks around fasteners that nothing else will remove.

Using Chlorine Bleach

It kills mildew but breaks down wood fibres, leaches natural colour, corrodes fasteners and leaves the grey oxidised layer untouched. A sodium percarbonate cleaner removes the grey along with the mildew and does not damage the wood, which is why it is the standard now.

Pressure Washing Too Aggressively

High pressure at close range cuts into softwood, raises the fibres and leaves a furry surface that drinks stain unevenly and weathers faster. Stay under about 1,500 psi with a wide tip held well back, and accept that a badly washed deck now needs sanding as well.

Sanding to Too Fine a Grit

Exterior stain needs an open surface to soak into. Sanding past about 80 grit burnishes the wood and closes the pores, so the stain sits on top and wears away early. Finer is better indoors and actively harmful on a deck.

Staining the Day After Washing

Boards dry from the outside in, so a surface that feels dry can still hold enough moisture underneath to stop penetration and cloud an oil finish. Twenty-four hours is a minimum, forty-eight after pressure washing, and longer when it is humid, cool or shaded.
