This choice is decided almost entirely by one thing you already know: whether your lawn is flat with obstacles, or sloped and open. Everything else is detail.

1. The Core Difference Is Weight Transfer

A self-propelled mower drives through two of its four wheels. Which two determines how it behaves, because a mower's weight does not stay put — it shifts constantly with slope, grass resistance and how full the bag is.

The Whole Trade-Off

Climbing a hill shifts weight backwards — onto rear-drive wheels, and away from front-drive wheels.

That single physical fact explains everything. Rear-wheel drive gains traction exactly when it is most needed. Front-wheel drive loses it exactly when it is most needed. In exchange, front-wheel drive turns effortlessly, because tipping the machine back lifts the driven wheels clear off the ground.

The same effect applies in thick or wet grass even on flat ground. Resistance at the deck pushes back against the mower's forward travel, which transfers weight rearward — so a front-drive machine that is fine on a dry, short lawn can start slipping in the first heavy cut of spring.

Everything from here is working out which side of that trade your particular lawn sits on. Neither system is better in the abstract, and the manufacturers do not disagree about the physics — they simply build both because both lawns exist.

Read the first two rows together and the decision is essentially made. If your lawn is defined by obstacles, front-wheel drive. If it is defined by slope, rear-wheel drive. The remaining rows only matter when those two are close.

3. When Front-Wheel Drive Wins

The manoeuvrability advantage is bigger in practice than it sounds on paper. To turn a front-wheel drive mower you push down slightly on the handle, the front wheels lift, the drive disengages itself, and the machine pivots on its rear wheels like a wheelbarrow. You do this without thinking, without releasing anything, and without breaking stride.

On a lawn with island beds, mature trees, a swing set, a patio edge and a path, that happens perhaps eighty times per cut. Over a season the difference in effort is genuine, and it is the reason many people with flat suburban lawns prefer front-wheel drive after trying both.

Front-drive machines are also generally lighter and cheaper — commonly $50 to $150 less for otherwise comparable specification — and lighter matters if you have to lift the mower over a step, into a shed, or onto a trailer.

The honest limitation is that front-wheel drive gets worse under exactly the conditions that make mowing hard: hills, long grass, wet grass and a full bag. If your lawn presents none of those, that limitation costs you nothing. If it presents two or more, you will notice quickly.

4. When Rear-Wheel Drive Wins

On any meaningful slope, rear-wheel drive is not a preference but a requirement. As the mower climbs, weight transfers onto the driven wheels and traction improves with gradient — the opposite of what happens at the front. Mowing across a slope, which is the safer technique on steeper ground, also favours rear drive because the rear wheels are carrying more of the machine's mass.

It also holds up in the conditions that defeat front drive. Thick spring growth, wet grass, a lawn you left an extra week — all of these raise deck resistance and shift weight backwards, and a rear-drive machine simply keeps pulling.

Rear-drive systems also tend to survive better over the years, since the drive components sit further from the deck discharge and take in less wet grass, grit and moisture. That is a modest advantage rather than a decisive one, and it is partly offset by rear systems generally costing more to repair when they do wear.

The cost is turning. The driven wheels stay planted through a pivot, so you either release the drive bail at each turn — which quickly becomes automatic but is an extra action eighty times a cut — or wrestle the machine around against its own traction. 5. The Bagging Factor Nobody Mentions

A full grass bag weighs a surprising amount, and all of it sits behind the rear axle. That weight acts as a lever, pressing the rear wheels down and lifting weight off the front.

For a rear-wheel drive mower this is straightforwardly good: traction improves as the bag fills. For a front-wheel drive mower it is straightforwardly bad, and it produces the specific complaint that comes up repeatedly from owners — the mower pulls fine at the start of a pass and starts slipping by the end of it, then works again after the bag is emptied.

If you bag every cut, that alone is a strong argument for rear-wheel drive even on a fairly flat lawn. If you mulch or side-discharge, the factor disappears entirely and the decision goes back to slope and obstacles.

It is worth deciding this deliberately rather than by default, because how you handle clippings is a choice with its own merits. Mulching returns nitrogen to the lawn and removes the emptying trips altogether, which is a good reason to mulch and buy front-wheel drive if your lawn otherwise suits it.

6. Where All-Wheel Drive Fits

All-wheel drive walk-behind mowers drive all four wheels, and on genuinely difficult ground they are transformative. Steep slopes, terraced gardens, uneven ground where wheels lift and lose contact, and wet hillsides are all handled better by AWD than by either two-wheel system.

The trade is the usual one. AWD machines cost meaningfully more, weigh more, and carry a second drive path that can eventually need repair. On a flat or gently rolling lawn you are paying for and pushing around capability you will never call on.

The clearest case for it is a lawn where you currently find yourself abandoning parts of the slope, mowing them by hand, or feeling that the machine is unsafe. If a rear-wheel drive mower would handle your ground comfortably, AWD is not necessary. If you are not sure a rear-drive machine would cope, it probably is.

One safety note that applies to all three: any slope steeper than about fifteen degrees is beyond what a walk-behind mower should be asked to do, whatever drives it. On ground that steep, the answer is a different machine or a different approach — not more traction.

7. Deciding for Your Lawn

  • Flat, lots of beds and trees, mulching: front-wheel drive, comfortably.
  • Any real slope: rear-wheel drive, without much argument.
  • You bag every cut: rear-wheel drive, even on flat ground.
  • Large open lawn, few obstacles: rear-wheel drive, since the turning penalty barely applies.
  • Steep, terraced or badly uneven: all-wheel drive, and mow across the slope.
  • Under a quarter acre and flat: consider skipping self-propelled entirely — a push mower is lighter, cheaper and has one fewer system to fail.

If your lawn genuinely splits the difference — a slight slope, a moderate number of obstacles — rear-wheel drive is the safer default. What About the Drive Controls Themselves?

Drive type is the big decision, but two related features change how a self-propelled mower feels day to day, and they cut across both front and rear systems.

Variable speed versus single speed. A single-speed drive travels at one fixed pace, and you either keep up with it or you do not. Variable speed lets you dial the pace to the grass and to your own walking speed, which matters more than it sounds — a mower geared slightly faster than you want to walk is genuinely unpleasant over an hour. Most variable systems use a lever or a dial on the handlebar; a few use a pressure-sensitive bail that speeds up as you push, which is the most natural of the lot and also the most expensive.

Bail position and the turning penalty. On a rear-wheel drive machine you will be releasing the drive at every turn, so how that control falls under your hand is not a detail. A full-width bail you can release with either hand is far easier to live with than a single small lever on one side, particularly if you are turning in both directions around obstacles. Worth putting your hands on before buying rather than reading about.

Electric Mowers Change the Weight Balance

One thing worth knowing if you are choosing between petrol and battery as well as between drive types: the two decisions interact. A petrol mower carries its engine over the front of the deck, which puts useful weight on the front wheels and modestly helps front-wheel drive traction. A battery mower usually carries its pack further back and is lighter overall, so a front-wheel drive electric machine tends to slip a little sooner than a petrol equivalent on the same slope.

It is not a large effect and it does not change the basic rule — slope still points to rear-wheel drive — but it does mean that a borderline lawn where a front-drive petrol mower coped adequately may not suit a front-drive battery model. If you are switching to battery and your lawn has any gradient at all, treat that as one more reason to specify rear-wheel drive rather than assuming the new machine will behave like the old one. 8. Common Mistakes to Avoid

Buying Front-Wheel Drive for a Sloped Lawn

The single most common regret in this category. Climbing shifts weight off the driven wheels, so traction gets worse exactly as the gradient increases. No tyre, tread or technique compensates for the physics.

Ignoring How You Handle Clippings

A filling bag levers weight off the front wheels, so a front-drive mower that pulls well empty can slip badly by the end of a pass. If you bag every cut, that alone points to rear-wheel drive even on flat ground.

Paying for All-Wheel Drive on a Flat Lawn

AWD is genuinely excellent on steep, terraced or uneven ground and pointless anywhere else. On a flat lawn it is extra cost, extra weight to push and turn, and a second drive path that can need repair.

Buying Self-Propelled for a Small Flat Lawn

Under about a quarter acre on level ground, a push mower is lighter, cheaper, simpler and has no drive system to wear out. Self-propelled earns its place on size, slope, or difficulty pushing — not by default.

Mowing Up and Down a Steep Slope

Whatever drives the wheels, mow across a slope rather than up and down it, and treat anything beyond about fifteen degrees as outside what a walk-behind should do. Traction is not the constraint there — safety is.
