Acrylic vs Asphalt Emulsion Driveway Sealer

One is a plastic film that happens to be black. The other is asphalt in water. They protect a driveway in different ways, they cost wildly different amounts, and for most people only one of them is the right answer.

The question is not which sealer is better. Acrylic is better at almost everything. The question is whether your driveway is worth three to five times the money, and for a plain black residential drive the honest answer is usually no.

1. What Each One Actually Is

Asphalt Emulsion

An asphalt emulsion sealer is exactly what the name says: asphalt cement, the same petroleum binder that holds the stones in your driveway together, ground into microscopic droplets and suspended in water with the help of an emulsifying agent. To that base the manufacturer adds clay, usually a bentonite or attapulgite, which thickens the mix, keeps the droplets apart in the pail and gives the dried film body. Then come mineral fillers, some pigment to deepen the black, and in the better grades a few per cent of latex polymer. When you spread it, the water evaporates, the asphalt droplets coalesce back into a continuous film, and the clay and fillers are locked inside it. What you are left with is a thin layer of new, unoxidised asphalt on top of the old, oxidised asphalt. It is protecting the pavement with more of the same material, refreshed.

That is both its strength and its limit. Because the film is asphalt, it bonds beautifully to asphalt, flexes with it and looks exactly like it. But it also ages like it. Ultraviolet light oxidises the film, gasoline dissolves it, and after a couple of seasons it has gone grey and thin in the tyre tracks, which is why the standard advice is to reseal every two to three years. Acrylic Sealer

An acrylic driveway sealer contains no asphalt at all. It is a water-based dispersion of acrylic polymer, the same family of resins that goes into exterior house paint, high-quality concrete sealers and the coloured coatings on tennis courts. When the water leaves, the polymer particles fuse into a tough, flexible, transparent plastic film. Colour comes from pigment dispersed in that film, so it can be any colour the manufacturer chooses to make. Black acrylic sealers exist and look very convincing on asphalt, but the chemistry does not care what colour it is.

The acrylic film is fundamentally different from an emulsion film. It is harder, it does not oxidise in sunlight the way asphalt does, it is not dissolved by petroleum, and it holds its colour for years. It also does not become one with the asphalt beneath it; it sits on top as a distinct coating that is bonded mechanically and chemically to the surface. That means it depends much more heavily on surface preparation and on being applied in the right film thickness, and it means the failure mode is different. Emulsion wears away gradually. Acrylic, if it fails, peels.

2. Where Coal Tar Fits In

You cannot talk about asphalt sealers for long without coal tar coming up, because for fifty years refined coal tar emulsion was the professional standard and asphalt emulsion was the cheap alternative. Coal tar uses refined coal tar pitch as the binder instead of petroleum asphalt. The pitch is chemically unlike petroleum, which is why gasoline and oil do not dissolve it, and it is harder and more UV-stable than asphalt. On performance alone it beats asphalt emulsion comfortably, and it is why older parking lots that were sealed with tar still look black long after the emulsion-sealed drive next door has gone grey.

The problem is that refined coal tar is roughly half polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons by weight, and the dust that wears off a sealed surface carries those PAHs into house dust and stormwater. Enough jurisdictions have banned or restricted it, including Washington State, Minnesota, the District of Columbia and a long list of counties and cities, that the big retailers have largely stopped carrying it and the manufacturers have reformulated their premium lines as asphalt emulsion. For this comparison, the relevant point is that coal tar sits above both acrylic and asphalt emulsion on fuel resistance, roughly between them on UV resistance, and is increasingly not an option at all. 3. Durability, UV and Fuel Resistance

How Long Each Lasts

A good asphalt emulsion, applied in two coats over a clean, sound surface, lasts one to three years before the tyre tracks go grey and it wants another coat. The economy grades sit at the bottom of that range, the polymer-modified and sand-filled premium grades at the top. A properly applied acrylic system lasts three to five years on a residential drive and we have seen well-maintained coloured acrylic surfaces go considerably longer than that with a maintenance coat every few years. A sealer of either type applied over dirt, over damp asphalt, or over a surface with the previous coating flaking off will fail in a season, and the acrylic will fail more dramatically because it peels rather than wears. Ultraviolet Resistance

This is where acrylic pulls furthest ahead. Ultraviolet light breaks down asphalt by oxidising its lighter fractions, and that is why untreated asphalt goes from black to grey in two or three summers. An emulsion sealer is a sacrificial layer of fresh asphalt that takes that UV hit so the pavement does not, and it greys out in exactly the same way, just a little more slowly because of its pigment and fillers. Acrylic polymers are chosen for exterior coatings precisely because they are UV-stable; house paint would not last a decade otherwise. An acrylic sealer does not oxidise in sunlight to any meaningful degree, and because it is opaque it blocks UV from reaching the asphalt underneath. In the high-UV climates of the Southwest and Florida, this alone can justify the price.

Oil and Gasoline Resistance

Neither product is good at this in absolute terms; coal tar was the benchmark and both of these fall short of it. Asphalt emulsion is the weaker of the two by a wide margin, because asphalt is itself a petroleum product and gasoline is a solvent for it. A fuel spill on an emulsion-sealed drive softens the film and, if left, dissolves through it into the asphalt below. Acrylic is genuinely better. The cured polymer film is not attacked by gasoline the way asphalt is, and a spill wiped up within a reasonable time leaves little trace. Prolonged contact will still soften and stain it, and a chronic drip from a leaking sump will get through eventually. If fuel resistance is your main concern, acrylic is the better of the two available options, and keeping a drip tray under the leaky car is better than either.

Flexibility and Cracking

Asphalt moves. It expands in summer heat, contracts in winter cold and flexes slightly under load, and a sealer has to move with it or crack. Emulsion has the advantage here because it is asphalt; it moves in step with the pavement. Acrylic is flexible enough for the job when formulated properly, but a cheap or heavily applied acrylic can become brittle in cold and show hairline crazing over the winter. This is why the good acrylic products are applied thin and why the manufacturers are so insistent about film thickness.

4. Colour and Appearance

Asphalt emulsion is black. Manufacturers add carbon black to make it a deeper, richer black, and the premium grades dry to a handsome dark charcoal, but that is the entire palette. If you want a black driveway that looks like new asphalt, emulsion gives you that look convincingly, and for the first year it is hard to tell a freshly emulsion-sealed drive from a freshly paved one.

Acrylic is where colour lives. Because the pigment sits in a clear polymer film, the manufacturer can make it any colour, and they do: the greens and reds of tennis courts, the tans and terracottas used on decorative drives and resort paths, the greys that make asphalt read as concrete from the street, and the bright colours on playground surfaces. This is not a novelty. In neighbourhoods with design covenants, on properties where a black driveway fights with the house, and anywhere the owner simply wants the drive to look like something other than a parking lot, acrylic is the only asphalt coating that can do it. The colour also holds. A coloured acrylic drive fades slowly and evenly over years rather than going patchy grey in eighteen months.

Two cautions. Lighter acrylic colours show tyre marks, oil drips and leaf stains far more than black does, and they need more frequent cleaning to look their best. And a coloured acrylic coating over an asphalt drive is a commitment; once the driveway is tan, going back to black means either a black acrylic over it or waiting years for the acrylic to wear through, because emulsion does not bond well to it.

5. Cost and Coverage

Asphalt emulsion is cheap. A five-gallon pail of economy grade runs in the low twenties of dollars at the big boxes, the premium polymer-modified and sand-filled grades run from roughly thirty-five to sixty, and a pail covers somewhere between two hundred and fifty and four hundred square feet per coat depending on how porous the surface is. Call it ten to twenty cents per square foot per coat in material, and twenty to forty cents for the two coats you should be applying. Acrylic is a different price bracket. The quality asphalt-specific acrylics, the coloured court surfacing systems and the black acrylic sealers sold through paving suppliers typically run from around forty to ninety dollars a gallon, and although coverage per gallon is higher because the film is thinner, usually in the range of a hundred to two hundred square feet per gallon per coat, you still end up at something like fifty cents to well over a dollar per square foot for two coats. Multiply that across a six hundred square foot drive and the material bill is three to seven hundred dollars against a hundred and fifty for emulsion. The way to reconcile those numbers is by years of service. Emulsion at forty cents per square foot every two years is twenty cents per square foot per year. Acrylic at ninety cents every four years is about twenty-two cents. On pure cost per year they are closer than the pail prices suggest, and acrylic pulls ahead if it genuinely goes five years. But that arithmetic only works if the acrylic is applied well enough to reach its lifespan, and the emulsion route spreads the cost out and lets you fix mistakes cheaply.

6. Application and Compatibility

Putting Down Emulsion

Emulsion is forgiving. You pour a ribbon across the drive and pull it out with a squeegee or a squeegee-brush, and the mix has enough body that minor unevenness levels itself. It is thick, it goes on at a relatively heavy film, it can carry sand for texture and wear, and a second coat over the first is straightforward once the first has dried. Putting Down Acrylic

Acrylic is applied like a coating, not a sealer. Thin, even coats, usually two and sometimes three, with a roller, a soft rubber squeegee or an airless sprayer. The film build per coat is a fraction of what an emulsion lays down, and the product is much less tolerant of puddling; a heavy patch of acrylic will skin over, trap water beneath, and crack or turn milky. It dries fast, often within an hour in warm weather, so you work in smaller sections and keep a wet edge to avoid lap marks. Acrylic does not normally carry sand mixed into the bucket; where texture is wanted, a fine silica is broadcast onto the wet coat or the manufacturer supplies a textured version. The surface has to be clean to a higher standard than emulsion demands, because the coating relies entirely on adhesion, and any oil spot or loose dust becomes a peel point. Some systems specify a primer over bare or heavily oxidised asphalt.

Going Over Old Coatings

Acrylic over cured, well-bonded emulsion generally works. The polymer bonds to the weathered emulsion film acceptably, and this is the route most people take when upgrading a driveway that has been emulsion-sealed for years. The old coating must be intact; anything flaking has to come off first, and removing old sealer is not a small job. Emulsion over acrylic is the problem direction. Asphalt emulsion does not wet out on a slick polymer surface and the bond is poor, so the emulsion tends to lift in sheets within a year. If the drive has ever had an acrylic coating, stay in the acrylic family. Neither product should go over an old coal tar coating without checking the manufacturer's compatibility guidance, because tar and asphalt are not fully compatible and acrylic adhesion to tar varies.

7. What Polymer-Modified Really Means

Walk the sealer aisle and half the pails say polymer-modified, latex-fortified, rubberised or acrylic-enhanced. It is worth being clear about what that is and is not. These are asphalt emulsions with a small quantity of latex polymer blended in at the factory, typically a few per cent by volume of an acrylic or a styrene-butadiene rubber latex. The polymer does several useful things: it makes the dried film more flexible so it moves with the asphalt through freeze-thaw cycles without cracking; it speeds the initial set, so the coat is rain-safe sooner; it improves adhesion to the pavement and to the previous coat; and it toughens the film so sand stays bound and the tyre tracks wear through more slowly.

What it does not do is turn an emulsion into an acrylic sealer. The binder is still asphalt. It still oxidises in the sun, gasoline still dissolves it, and it still lasts two to three years rather than four or five. A latex-fortified emulsion is a better emulsion, not a cheap acrylic, and the marketing sometimes blurs that line. If the pail is black, sells for under seventy dollars for five gallons, and is spread with a squeegee at three hundred square feet a pail, it is an emulsion however many polymer words are on the label.

Contractors achieve the same effect by adding latex fortifier to a plain emulsion at the truck, and the commercial-grade products are typically sold that way. For a homeowner, the premium retail grades that already include the polymer are the sensible buy, and they are what we recommend for the standard black driveway in almost every case.

8. Which One for Your Driveway

Choose Asphalt Emulsion When

Your driveway is standard black asphalt in reasonable condition and you want to keep it black, protected and looking maintained. You are comfortable resealing every two to three years and would rather spend a hundred and fifty dollars every couple of years than six hundred every four or five. You are doing the work yourself with a squeegee and want a forgiving material. The drive has been emulsion-sealed before. You live in a climate with hard winters where flexibility matters more than UV resistance. Choose Acrylic When

You want a colour other than black. The driveway is a decorative or high-end surface, or it abuts stamped concrete, pavers or a coloured path and you want it to harmonise rather than contrast. You are in a high-UV climate and tired of resealing every other summer. You have a chronic fuel or oil issue and want the better of the two available resistances. You are willing to prepare the surface meticulously and apply thin coats carefully, or you are paying a contractor who does this regularly. You want to seal a fresh overlay to a high standard and leave it alone for several years. Acrylic is also the right family if the drive has ever been coated with acrylic before, regardless of anything else.

Choose Neither When

The driveway is alligatored, ravelling badly, has depressions holding water or has structural cracks. No sealer of any chemistry fixes those. The sealer versus resurfacer question comes first, and the sealer is the last step after the repair, not a substitute for it. Spending the acrylic premium on a failing surface is the most expensive way there is to buy one more year.

Common Mistakes

Treating latex-fortified as acrylic

A polymer-modified emulsion is an emulsion with a little latex in it. It is a better black sealer, not a long-life acrylic coating, and it will not last five years.

Applying acrylic like emulsion

Thick ribbons pulled out with a squeegee are the emulsion method. Acrylic wants thin, even coats with a roller or sprayer. Puddled acrylic hazes, traps water and cracks.

Putting emulsion over an acrylic-coated drive

Asphalt emulsion does not bond to a polymer film. It lifts in sheets within a year. Once a drive is acrylic, it stays acrylic.

Buying acrylic to fix a failing surface

Neither product repairs anything. Cracks, ravelling and depressions need filler or a resurfacer first. An expensive coating on a bad base is the most expensive way to get one more season.

Skimping on prep because acrylic is tougher

The opposite is true. Acrylic relies entirely on adhesion and peels from any oil spot or dust film. It needs a cleaner surface than emulsion, not a dirtier one.
