1. How Long It Should Actually Take
Before troubleshooting, establish whether anything is wrong. Dry, cured and ready for traffic are three different states, and people frequently panic at the first while expecting the third.

The Line Between Slow and Stuck
Slow curing improves each day. Stuck curing does not.
The useful test is direction of travel rather than absolute time. If the surface is measurably firmer each morning than the one before, it is curing slowly and will get there. If it is exactly as tacky on day five as it was on day two, it has stopped, and every additional day of waiting will produce the same result.

Time can rescue a moderately thick coat if the weather turns warm and dry, since curing continues slowly through the skin. 3. Cause Two: The Weather Was Wrong
Curing is evaporation, and evaporation depends entirely on conditions. Sealer applied outside the window may never harden properly no matter how long it sits.

4. Cause Three: Something Underneath
Tackiness confined to specific areas rather than spread across the driveway usually points at what was on the surface before sealing.
- Oil and fuel residue, which soften the sealer above them and keep it soft indefinitely.
- Uncured crack filler, whose trapped solvent migrates up into the coating over the repair.
- A previous coat that had not fully cured when the new one went over it.
- Damp trapped in the surface, particularly after washing without allowing full drying.
- Solvent-based products applied over incompatible existing coatings.
- Water sitting in cracks and low points that was sealed over rather than dried out.
The pattern tells you which. Soft patches directly over visible crack repairs point at filler cure time, and most fillers want 24 to 48 hours with cold patch commonly wanting 30 days. The Washing Trap

5. What to Do About It
Work through this in order. The first two steps cost nothing and resolve a good share of cases.
- Wait, and measure. Test the same spot each morning and note whether it is firmer than yesterday. Improvement means keep waiting.
- Keep everything off it. Traffic on tacky sealer embeds grit and tracks it indoors, and makes the eventual assessment harder.
- Give it warmth and airflow. A run of warm, dry, breezy days does more than anything else you can actively do.
- Sweep dry sand over persistent tacky areas as a temporary measure, which stops tracking while curing continues.
- If there is no improvement after a week of good weather, accept it has stopped and plan removal.
- Remove the affected areas, address the cause, and reapply thinly in the right conditions.

6. When It Tracks Into the House
The practical emergency that brings most people to this question. Uncured sealer transfers to shoes, tyres and paws, and from there to floors and carpet.
- Sand the driveway as above, which stops the transfer at source and is the highest-value step.
- Keep a mat and a shoe-off rule at the door until it cures.
- Deal with tracked marks quickly, since fresh residue lifts far more easily than dried.
- Test any cleaner on an inconspicuous area first, particularly on carpet and vinyl.
- Keep pets off entirely, since they cannot avoid it and will groom it off their paws.
- Park on the street rather than driving over it, which also prevents wheel track damage.
