Why Your Driveway Sealer Looks Streaky
You did the work, it dried, and now the driveway has stripes. Nearly every streak has one of ten causes, and nearly all of them are fixed with a properly mixed second coat laid the other way. Here is how to tell which one you have.

A streak is a difference in film thickness you can see. Find out why the film is thicker in one place than another and you have found your cause. In our experience it is the pail, the squeegee or the sun, in that order.
1. Reading the Streaks
Before you open another pail, go and look at the driveway in flat light, early morning or an overcast afternoon, when the low sun is not throwing shadows off every bit of texture. Streaks tell you what went wrong by their shape, direction and colour, and five minutes of honest looking saves a wasted second coat.
Long straight bands running the direction you worked, with a crisp edge on one side, are lap marks. Each pass dried before the next one overlapped it, and the overlap is now a double-thickness stripe. This is the signature of hot pavement, direct sun, or simply working too slowly.
Alternating dark and pale bands that follow the strips you laid out, with the pale band often at the end of a squeegee pull, mean the sealer was being pushed too far. The first part of every pass got a full coat and the tail got a scrape.
A gradual shift from rich black at one end of the driveway to grey-brown at the other points at the pail. The first buckets were mostly water off the top of an unstirred drum, or the first pail was thinned more than the second, or the last pail was scraped from the settled bottom.
Irregular, blotchy pale areas with no straight edges follow the pavement, not your application. Those are porous patches drinking the coat, standing water diluting it, or old sealer residue refusing it.
Fine parallel lines or a brush texture across the whole surface are tool marks from a stiff broom or a squeegee blade held too upright, frozen in place because the sealer set before it could flow out.
Dark rings or halos around specific spots that were oil stains or patches are the primer or the repair showing through a coat that is too thin to hide it.
Once you have identified the pattern, the sections below take each cause in turn. The good news up front: with one exception, everything here is fixed by a second coat done properly.
2. Application Causes
Lap marks from a lost wet edge
The most common streak on a homeowner-sealed driveway. Sealer is applied in strips, and each strip needs to be overlapped into the previous one while the previous one is still wet enough to blend. If it has skinned over, the overlap sits on top instead of merging, and you get a stripe that is twice as thick along every join. It shows as a darker, sometimes shinier band with a sharp edge, running the length of the strip.
The causes are heat, sun, wind, and working too slowly. On warm pavement a squeegeed coat of asphalt emulsion can skin in under ten minutes. If you stop to refill, answer the phone or reposition the hose, the edge is gone. Pros avoid this by working in a continuous ribbon, with a helper pouring ahead, and by starting at dawn in summer. Pushing the sealer too far
Sealer pails specify a coverage rate, typically 250 to 400 square feet per 5 gallons for a first coat on average asphalt. Homeowners routinely stretch a pail to 500 or 600 square feet, partly to save money and partly because a squeegee makes it easy to keep pushing material along until the puddle runs out. The start of each pull is coated properly; the end is scraped. The result is a regular pattern of dark and pale bands matching your strip width.
The tell is that the pale bands are always at the same end of the driveway or the same side of each strip, wherever the pull finished. Use our driveway sealer calculator to work out how much you actually needed; if you used significantly less, this is your streak.
Squeegee and brush marks
A squeegee held at a steep angle, or with a worn or nicked blade, leaves fine lines in the film. A stiff-bristle sealer broom drawn through a coat that is already tacky leaves brush texture. Both are harmless structurally but ugly, and in low light they look like streaks. The right technique is a low blade angle, letting the sealer flow ahead of the tool rather than being scraped by it, and a final light pass with a soft broom in one consistent direction while the coat is still fully wet.
Roller application, which some people use on small driveways, produces a different problem: roller stipple and pronounced overlap lines, because a roller lays down a thinner film that skins faster. Uneven pouring
If you pour a puddle and then spread it, the centre of the puddle gets more sealer than the edges no matter how carefully you work. Pouring in a continuous ribbon along the top of each strip, rather than a series of blobs, gives the squeegee an even supply. Blob pouring shows up as a repeating pattern of dark ovals with paler surrounds.
3. Product Causes
The pail was not stirred
This is the cause we see most often when a driveway goes from black at one end to muddy grey at the other. Asphalt emulsion and coal tar sealers are suspensions of heavy solids in water, and in a pail that has been sitting on a shelf for months the solids settle into a dense layer at the bottom. The liquid on top is mostly water and emulsifier with a little pigment. If you pour off the top without stirring, the first third of the driveway gets a coat of dirty water; the last third gets a thick paste that will not spread and dries lumpy.
Big-box pails of Latex-ite, Black Jack and the store brands all carry a stir-thoroughly warning, and it means what it says. A paint stick is not enough for a 5-gallon pail that has settled hard. Use a drill with a paddle mixer for two to three full minutes, scraping the bottom, until the material is uniform in colour and consistency from top to bottom. Stir again halfway through the pail if you are working slowly, and if you are combining pails from different batches, box them together in a clean drum so the whole driveway gets the same mix.
Sealers with sand or aggregate already added settle even faster. If you have added your own sand, keep stirring throughout, because sand drops out of suspension within a couple of minutes.
Over-dilution
Many products allow a small amount of water to be added to a first coat on rough or porous asphalt, usually up to 10 per cent. Some people add far more, either by accident with a hose, or on purpose to make a pail go further. Contractors who quote suspiciously low prices sometimes do the same in the tank. A thinned sealer has less solids per gallon, dries to a thinner film, looks grey-brown rather than black, and any small variation in application becomes a visible streak because there is so little pigment to hide it.
If your driveway dried to an even, slightly brown tone with faint streaks everywhere rather than a few strong bands, thinning is a likely factor. It also explains a coat that wore through in a single winter. The fix is a full-strength second coat.
Mixed products or batches
Switching from one brand or grade to another halfway through, or even between two pails of the same product from different production lots, can leave a visible line where the colour and gloss change. Coal tar and asphalt emulsion dry to noticeably different shades; coal tar is a flatter, slightly grey-black, asphalt emulsion a deeper brown-black. Do not mix them on one surface. 4. Surface Causes
Porous patches drinking the first coat
Asphalt is not uniform. The areas that get the most sun and traffic oxidise and open up, the areas under trees or near the garage stay tighter. A repair patch of cold-mix asphalt is far more porous than the surrounding pavement. When the first coat goes on, the open areas soak up sealer like a sponge and end up with a thin film on the surface, while the tighter areas hold most of the coat on top. The result is irregular pale blotches that follow the pavement condition, not your strips.
This is not a mistake on your part. It is simply what a first coat does on uneven asphalt, and it is why the manufacturers say two coats. The first coat fills the pores and evens the absorption; the second coat is the one that gives you a uniform finish. Skipping the second coat on weathered asphalt guarantees a blotchy driveway.
New asphalt
Fresh asphalt is both porous and oily, and a first coat on a driveway that is under a year old often goes on patchy: it soaks in unevenly and the surface oils resist it in places. If you have already done it and it looks patchy, a second coat after the first has cured fully will usually even it out, but do not be surprised if a driveway sealed too young needs a third the following year.
Old sealer residue
If the driveway was sealed before, the old coat is almost never worn evenly. Tyre tracks and the apron are down to bare asphalt while the edges and the area under the parked car still have most of their old sealer. New sealer sits on the old coat and soaks into the bare areas, and the two dry to different shades. On top of that, old sealer that is glossy, chalky or flaking will not take a new coat evenly at all. Spot-primed oil stains showing through
Oil spots need an oil-spot primer before sealing, or the sealer will not bond over them. But the primer itself, and the degreased patch around it, has a different texture and porosity from the surrounding asphalt, and a single thin coat of sealer will show a halo where the primer was. If your streaks are dark rings around the places you treated, that is the cause. The second coat almost always hides it. Moisture and standing water
A driveway that was pressure washed the same morning, or one with low spots that hold water, is wet in some places and dry in others when the sealer goes on. The wet areas dilute the coat from below and dry pale. Low spots that puddle after rain are always the pale patches on a sealed driveway. Give a washed driveway a full day of sun, sweep standing water off, and mist rather than soak if you are wetting the surface for hot weather.
5. Weather and Timing Causes
Direct sun and hot pavement
Black asphalt in July sun runs 20 to 40°F hotter than the air. At 120°F and above, water-based sealer flashes off before it can level, which locks in every squeegee line, every overlap, every pour mark. It also leaves a weaker film. If you sealed in the afternoon in summer and the driveway is covered in crisp lap lines and tool marks, this is why. The fix for next time is to start at first light and mist the pavement ahead of the sealer; the fix for now is a second coat in the cool of the morning.
Second coat applied too soon
A second coat on a first coat that is dry to the touch but not cured causes a different kind of streak. The solvent and water in the second coat soften the first, the squeegee drags the partly cured film, and you get a mottled, smeared appearance with drag marks. Most products want 4 to 8 hours between coats in good weather, and we prefer to wait until the next morning. Full drying times are in how long for driveway sealer to dry.
Second coat applied too late
Less common, but if weeks pass between coats and the first coat has been driven on, the tyre tracks are polished and contaminated and the second coat takes differently there. Two coats within a day or two of each other is the goal.
Dew, rain and humidity
A shower or heavy dew on a coat that is dry to touch but not cured leaches emulsifier to the surface and leaves grey, cloudy streaks that follow the way the water ran. This usually weathers off over a few weeks. If it rained hard enough to wash sealer away, you will see bare patches and a run-off stain at the bottom of the drive, which needs a recoat. 6. The Fix: A Second Coat Done Right
For everything above except failing old sealer, the fix is the same, and it is the coat you should probably have applied anyway. The point of a second coat is not just more protection; it is the coat that gives you an even film. Here is how to make sure it does.
Wait for the first coat to cure
Not dry to touch; cured. Give it at least 24 hours in warm dry weather, longer if it was humid or cool. If it is still tacky anywhere, wait. Check the weather for the next two days and pick a morning with the pavement between 60 and 100°F, no rain for 24 hours and a mild night ahead.
Clean lightly
Sweep off leaves and dust. If the driveway has been driven on, hose off the tyre tracks and let it dry completely. Do not pressure wash a coat that is only a day or two old.
Stir properly and box the pails
Drill and paddle, two to three minutes per pail, scraped from the bottom until uniform. If you have more than one pail, pour them into a clean drum or a spare pail and mix them together so the whole second coat is identical. Do not thin a second coat at all; it is the finish coat and needs full solids to hide what is under it.
Cross-hatch the direction
Apply the second coat at right angles to the first. If your first coat ran down the length of the driveway, run the second across it. This breaks up the lap lines of the first coat, evens out the thick-thin banding from over-pushing, and means any lap marks in the second coat are crossing rather than reinforcing the first. On a long narrow driveway where working crosswise is awkward, at least stagger the strip positions so the overlaps do not land on top of one another.
Keep a wet edge and do not over-work
Pour a continuous ribbon, spread with the squeegee at a low angle, and blend into the previous strip while it is still wet. Work steadily and do not stop mid-strip. Apply at the rate the pail says, not further. The second coat on a sealed surface goes further than the first, typically 400 to 500 square feet per 5 gallons, because it is not soaking in, so do not be tempted to stretch it beyond that.
Finish each strip with a single, gentle pass of a soft broom in one direction if you want a uniform matte texture. Then leave it alone. Going back to touch up a spot in a coat that has started to set makes a new mark worse than the one you were fixing.
Spot fixes
If the streaking is confined to one area, a small section at the apron, one pale patch over a repair, you can spot-coat it, but the edges of a spot coat will show as their own faint line unless you feather them with a brush and the surrounding coat is fresh. On a coat more than a few weeks old, a full second coat looks better than a patch.
7. When to Wait and When to Strip
Streaks that fade on their own
Not every streak needs a second coat. Freshly applied sealer is glossy and any variation in thickness shows as a difference in sheen. Over the first three to six weeks the surface oxidises to an even matte, tyres scuff it uniformly, and mild lap marks and faint banding often soften to the point that you stop noticing them. Dew and rain leaching, the grey cloudy streaks, almost always disappear within a month of normal weather. If the streaks are faint, the coat is well bonded and the coverage was roughly right, give it a month before deciding.
Crisp double-thickness lap lines, pronounced pale bands from over-pushing, and porous blotches do not fade. Those are real differences in film thickness and the thin areas will wear through first. Recoat them.
When a second coat will not help
A second coat needs something sound to stick to. If the streaks are caused by old sealer underneath that is flaking, peeling, or so thick from years of annual recoats that it has started to crack like alligator skin, putting another coat on top just gives you more material to fall off. Likewise, if oil or contamination is bleeding through the first coat, more sealer on top will bleed through too. The spot needs degreasing and priming before recoating.
When to strip
Stripping is the last resort and is never justified for cosmetic streaking alone. It is a lot of work, involves chemical strippers or aggressive pressure washing, and asphalt does not love either. Strip only when the old sealer is failing across a large area, when there is heavy build-up from many coats that is cracking and lifting, or when a previous coat was a product incompatible with what you want to use now. Otherwise, clean, recoat and let the sun even things out.

Common Mistakes
Pouring off the top of an unstirred pail
The first third of the driveway gets dirty water and the last third gets paste. Drill-mix every pail until it is uniform from bottom to top, and box multiple pails together.
Stretching a pail past its coverage rate
Every squeegee pull ends with a scrape instead of a coat. Buy the right amount and stop pushing when the film starts to thin.
Applying the second coat in the same direction
The lap lines land on top of the first coat's lap lines and double up. Cross-hatch at right angles so the two coats cancel each other's marks.
Going back to touch up a spot that has started to set
A tacky film drags under the squeegee and leaves a smear worse than the original streak. Leave it for the second coat.
Recoating over flaking old sealer
A new coat is only as good as what it sticks to. If the streaks are caused by failing sealer underneath, more sealer is more material to peel off.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my driveway sealer look streaky?
Streaks almost always come from uneven film thickness. Overlapping passes that dried before they were blended, a pail that was not stirred so the solids settled, sealer thinned with too much water, or a surface that absorbed the coat unevenly all leave bands of thicker and thinner sealer that show as light and dark stripes.
Will a second coat of driveway sealer fix streaks?
In most cases, yes. A properly mixed second coat applied at right angles to the first evens out the film thickness and hides lap marks, thin spots and porous patches. It will not hide streaks caused by contamination or old failing sealer underneath, which need to be dealt with before recoating.
Do driveway sealer streaks go away on their own?
Mild streaking from a slightly uneven first coat often softens within a few weeks as the sealer fully cures and the surface takes on an even matte finish under sun and traffic. Heavy lap marks, pale thin bands and brush texture do not go away and need another coat.

Why did the sealer dry lighter in some areas than others?
Lighter areas are thinner areas. Either the sealer was pushed too far and applied too thin, the pavement absorbed more there, water was standing in a low spot and diluted it, or that section of the pail was mostly water because the solids had settled and were never stirred back in.
Can you seal a driveway in direct sun?
You can, but hot pavement in full sun flash-dries the sealer before it levels, which freezes every squeegee pass and overlap in place. Work early in the morning, mist the surface lightly and keep a wet edge. In midsummer, afternoon sun is the most common cause of lap marks.
When should I strip streaky sealer instead of recoating?
Only when the streaks are caused by something underneath that a new coat cannot bond to: peeling or flaking old sealer, heavy build-up of many old coats, or oil and contamination that has bled through. Cosmetic streaking in an otherwise well-bonded coat never justifies stripping.

The Bottom Line
Streaks are differences in film thickness. Nearly all of them trace to an unstirred pail, a squeegee pushed too far, or sealer that flashed in the sun before it could level. Every one of those is fixed by a full-strength, properly mixed second coat applied crosswise on a cool morning.
Give faint streaks a month to weather out before you act. Recoat the crisp ones. Strip only when what is underneath is failing, because more sealer on a bad base is just more sealer to peel.
