The outdoor row is worth stating plainly because it is the most common misapplication. Standard epoxy ambers and chalks under ultraviolet light, going yellow within a season or two of direct sun, and on an exterior slab it also has to survive freeze-thaw cycling that will find any weakness in the bond. Driveways and patios want a penetrating sealer instead, which sits in the concrete rather than on it.

Indoors, the same UV weakness shows up in a narrower way: a garage with a large south-facing window or a door left open all summer can amber in the sunlit strip alone. A polyaspartic or polyurethane topcoat solves it, and it is one of the main reasons those coats exist.

3. The Test That Decides Everything

If you take one thing from this guide, take this. Concrete on grade wicks moisture from the ground continuously, and that vapour has to leave somewhere. Coat the slab with an impermeable film and the vapour collects underneath until it pushes the coating off.

The Plastic Sheet Test

  • Tape a square of plastic sheeting, roughly 18 by 18 inches, tightly to the bare slab on all four edges.

  • Lift it and look. Condensation on the underside, or a dark damp patch on the concrete, means vapour is coming through.
  • Test several spots, especially near walls, in corners, and anywhere the slab meets earth.
  • A dry sheet everywhere is a good sign but not a guarantee, since conditions change seasonally.
  • For anything expensive, a calcium chloride or relative humidity test gives a number instead of an impression.

If the Test Comes Back Wet

You have three options, and one of them is not "coat it anyway".

Fix the source where you can: grading, gutters and downpipes moving water away from the slab. Use a moisture-tolerant system, meaning a purpose-made vapour barrier primer or a breathable coating rather than standard epoxy. Or choose a covering that does not need to bond at all, such as interlocking tiles or roll-out matting, which let the slab breathe underneath.

4. Preparation Is the Whole Job

Epoxy bonds mechanically, gripping into the texture of the concrete. A smooth, sealed or contaminated slab gives it nothing to grip, which is why preparation accounts for most of the labour on any professional job and most of the failures on amateur ones.

Oil is the other prep problem, because it soaks into porous concrete and no amount of scrubbing lifts what has penetrated. It needs a degreaser or an absorbent poultice that draws it back out, and any oil left in the slab is a spot where the epoxy simply will not bond. Where it genuinely loses is a large area, a slab that needs real repair, or any job where you would be learning on the only floor you have.

6. The Alternatives Worth Knowing

Epoxy is not automatically the answer, and three alternatives beat it in specific circumstances.

Polyaspartic and Polyurea

Both cure far faster than epoxy, tolerate a wider temperature range, and are genuinely UV stable rather than merely protected. A properly specified and properly installed 100% solids epoxy floor in a residential garage is a ten to twenty year proposition. Almost nothing ends one early except the failures already described.

  • Moisture from beneath, which lifts the coating in sheets with clean concrete underneath.
  • Inadequate preparation, which shows up as peeling that starts at an edge or a wheel track.
  • Hot tyre pickup, where warm tyres lift a thin or poorly cured coating; a hazard of thin films, not thick ones.
