4. Technique That Prevents Gouging

Almost every belt sander mistake produces the same result: a dish in the workpiece that then has to be sanded out across the entire surface. The technique that avoids it is specific and easy to learn.

Start the machine off the work. Bring it up to speed in the air, lower it onto the surface while already moving forward, and lift it off while still moving. Touching down a stationary belt is the classic way to dig a hollow.
