4. Sanding Without Leaving Swirl Marks
Swirl marks are the characteristic failure of random orbit sanding, and they are invisible on bare wood and glaringly obvious once stain or finish goes on.
Move slowly, about an inch per second. The instinct is to sweep the sander around quickly, which leaves areas that have seen only a few random passes and therefore retain a pattern. A slow steady pass gives the random action time to do its job.
Do not press down. Pressure stalls the pad rotation, at which point the machine is orbiting without spinning and leaving exactly the directional pattern the design exists to avoid. The weight of the machine is the correct pressure.

6. Matching the Sander to the Job
