1. The Three Types of Concrete Stain
Reactive Acid Stains
Metallic salts in a mild acid solution that react chemically with free lime in the concrete. The colour becomes part of the slab, so it cannot peel, flake or wear off — it can only be ground away. The palette is limited to earth tones: browns, tans, rusts, and blue-greens.
The trade-off is predictability. The reaction depends on the concrete's chemistry, so an old slab with little free lime left, or one with a hard troweled surface, may take colour weakly or unevenly. Acid handling also demands gloves, eye protection and care, and the surface has to be neutralised and rinsed thoroughly before anything else goes on it.
Water-Based Penetrating Stains
Fine pigments in a water carrier that soak into the pore structure and deposit colour without a chemical reaction. The colour you pick is close to the colour you get, the range extends far beyond earth tones, and they work on slabs where acid staining would struggle — including newer concrete and previously ground surfaces.
They produce less depth than a reactive stain unless deliberately layered, which is why the better exterior products are designed to be blended. There is no acid to handle, no neutralising step, and cleanup is water.
Solid Colour Stains
Effectively a thin, tough paint: opaque acrylic that covers the concrete completely and delivers a uniform colour. The reason to choose one is a slab that no transparent product can rescue — patched, oil-ghosted, or made of two pours that never matched.
Because it is a film on the surface, it wears in traffic paths and eventually needs recoating, and the concrete no longer looks like concrete. 2. Will It Work on Your Slab?
Four checks, in the order that matters. Any one of them can rule out staining entirely, and all four take an afternoon.
Is it sealed? Drop water on several areas. If it beads or sits rather than soaking in within about thirty seconds, there is a sealer present and no stain will penetrate. How old is it? New concrete needs a full cure, typically at least 28 days, before staining. Very old concrete usually takes water-based stain well but may respond weakly to acid stain, because the free lime the reaction needs has largely carbonated over the decades.
How was it finished? A hard power-troweled surface is dense and closed, and stains struggle to penetrate it. A broom finish or a light float finish is open and takes colour readily. If water sits on an unsealed slab, the surface may simply be too tight, and a light grind or an etch is needed to open it.

One more consideration before you commit: what happens if you dislike the result. 4. Preparation Decides the Result
More than with almost any other coating, what you do before the stain comes out determines what you end up looking at for the next decade. Stain is transparent; the slab underneath is the picture.
Strip any sealer. Chemically or mechanically, completely and evenly. Patchy sealer removal produces patchy colour, and the patches follow the shape of wherever the stripper worked best.
Degrease individually, then clean the whole slab. Treat oil spots one at a time with a degreaser or poultice before washing the whole surface, or you simply spread thin oil across a wider area.
Pressure wash with a fan tip, not a turbo nozzle. A rotating nozzle held close cuts into the surface paste and leaves wand marks that the stain will highlight rather than hide. Keep the tip moving and stand back.
Repair cracks before, not after. Patches will not take stain the same way the slab does, so plan for them to show. On a variegated acid-stained finish that can read as character; on a uniform water-based colour it reads as a repair. Either way, repair first and let the material cure fully.
Let it dry completely. At least 24 hours after washing, longer in cool or humid weather. Damp concrete dilutes the stain and produces weak, uneven colour.
5. Applying and Sealing
Test first, always. A square yard in a corner, taken all the way through to the sealer, tells you what the whole patio will look like. Stain colour changes dramatically once sealed — usually deepening substantially — so a test that stops before sealing tells you very little.
Apply with a sprayer, work with a brush. Most stains go on best with a plastic pump sprayer, worked in with a broom or brush where coverage needs evening out. Avoid metal sprayers with acid stains, for obvious reasons.
Keep edges wet and work in irregular sections. Straight stop lines show. Working to a natural break — a control joint, an edge — or feathering into an irregular boundary keeps the finish continuous.
Neutralise acid stains. A baking soda or ammonia solution, then a thorough rinse until the water runs clear, and a full dry. Residual acid under a sealer will cause it to fail.
Seal with two thin coats. Sealer is what protects the colour from UV, traffic and dirt, and it is also what determines the final appearance — matte, satin or wet look. How Much Product and How Long It Takes
Coverage varies with porosity more than with the label. As a working figure, a gallon of water-based stain covers roughly 200 to 400 square feet on a typical patio slab, and acid stain concentrates go considerably further once diluted. Sealer is the bigger consumable: two coats over a 400-square-foot patio takes two to three gallons of most exterior sealers, and it is worth buying it all in one batch.
On time, a realistic weekend looks like this. Saturday morning: strip, degrease and pressure wash. Saturday afternoon: repairs, and let everything dry. Sunday morning: stain, and for acid stain, neutralise and rinse. Sunday afternoon and into Monday: dry thoroughly, then two coats of sealer with the recoat window between them. Anyone compressing that into a single day is skipping a drying step, and drying steps are the ones that show up later as blotches.
6. Choosing a Colour
Two rules save most of the regret. First, the colour on the chart is the colour in a lab; the colour on your slab is that filtered through whatever grey the concrete already is, plus the darkening that arrives with the sealer. Pale, warm tones shift the least; blues and greens shift the most.
Second, look at the fixed things around the slab rather than at the chart. The house's brick or render, the fence, the roof and any adjacent paving are all staying put. Earth tones — tan, mid brown, weathered grey — sit comfortably against almost all of them and are the reason those colours dominate the category.

Keeping It Looking Good
A stained slab is maintained through its sealer rather than through the stain. Sweep grit off regularly — it is abrasive and wears the sealer in traffic paths faster than weather does — and rinse the surface a few times a season, particularly under trees where leaf tannins stain and algae takes hold.
Watch the water test on the sealer the same way you would on any sealed concrete: when water stops beading and starts darkening the surface, the sealer has worn thin and a fresh coat is due. Catching that early means a clean recoat over a sound surface; leaving it means dirt embeds in the exposed stain and the recoat locks it in. In cold climates, keep de-icing salt off a stained patio entirely — it attacks the sealer first and the surface paste after that, and the damage shows as pale, dusty patches exactly where the colour was strongest.
