4. Router Lifts and Height Adjustment

Setting bit height is the operation you perform most often on a router table, and how it is done determines whether the table is pleasant or infuriating.

Without a lift you adjust from underneath. That means crouching, reaching past the dust hose, releasing a lock, turning a knob you cannot see, and then checking the height from above. It works and it is slow.

A lift raises the router from above the table. A screw mechanism accessed through the insert plate moves the router precisely, usually with a scale reading in thousandths. Setting a height becomes a ten second operation with a repeatable result.
